Help! Major System Failure!

All started tonight when we took our daughter to Hockey practice. After stopping in the car park, chatting in the car with the key in my hand I suddenly realised the engine was still running!!! Putting the key in again and stirring it around made no difference so I pulled the key out again and then turned the lights off and the engine stopped! Put the key in and repeated the excercise and the same thing happened.

Whilst worrying about this, someone came up and told me that the break lights had been stuck on for the last half mile. Tried it again and all seemed ok but on the way home lots of bongs tellng me the suspension was lowering and with several warning lights on the dash.

Got home, the suspension still down. Called LRA and they're going to call me in the morning with the possibility of a Technician coming out.

Anyone any idea how serious this is for a car out of warranty?

It'll be something simple like a bad earth. If you can , check the breaklight bulb .

I had the exact same as you last Saturday and it turned out be a loose wire connecting with the light housing on a trailer I was towing.

this will be of no use to you... but...

the same thing (lights can turn the car 'off') happened to my S1 Lotus elise

cured by a new ignition system eg just a lock barrel! the earth had failed/ snapped

cost a lot less than the D3 fix will be, I bet!

A failed brake pedal switch can cause this

Sounds like it could be your brake bulbs - I had the same issue -

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic18669.html

Look half way down the page on the above link for my post - LRA sorted it all by changing the bulbs for LR ones Thumbs Up

Engine won't switch off, suspension faults, brake lights permanently on - it's obvious it was the bulb you just changed! Laughing

Hope it sorts it Thumbs Up

Given that just about everything on the car talks to everything else via CAN bus it's possible for a fault in one subsystem to have interesting effects on the whole system. I somehow don't think it will be the bulb that's at fault!

Some rather sweeping generalisations there lr1 Rolling Eyes

The site has always been a focus point for faults to be raised and discussed and this can give an exaggerated impression that its a problem motor... The truth is that the vast majority of owners are very happy whether in or out of warranty.

Enjoy the SEAT Thumbs Up
