HELP - Turbo Actuator won’t free

So after the ESF came up I’ve plugged it in and the F/C its throwing is P123B-00. After my first post on the forum where I was advised to check hoses, Intercooler, and the actuator. Low and behold after battling the heat shields off I checked the movement when turning on the ignition and nothing. Made “the tool” up and got it in there only to find i can’t move it, not at all! Been soaking it for three days with WD40 still nothing. Tapped it with a hammer and a long screw driver and I mean tapped as I was worried about damaging things and still no movement.

Was pleased to find the actuator not moving initially now I’m just back to thinking turbo might have to come out. Big Cry

The thing is people think its the arm pivot point that seizes up, but I think its the actual vanes in the turbo itself, common issue on the VWs, see yoututbe and search for mr muscle turbo or manifold cleaner.

Anyone actually done this? There are some horror stories on the web about overheating following “cleaning” the turbo using this method?

It makes total sense to me that the vanes rather than actuator are seized though as having looked at few pictures and diagrams of the turbo on the forum there would need to be a big external build up on the actuator for the hook tool and WD40 method to work in freeing off the mechanism because extranerlly there isn’t much to lubericate. The arm of the actuator is simply a ball and socket most of which sits in “mid air” so wouldn’t corrode and seize onto anything.

Think I’ll take the inlet pipe off put a camera down and have a look followed by some specificly designed decarbonising turbo cleaner.

I used some wynn vvt cleaner which you add to the fuel.

Not sure of the results yet.

I cured my turbo issues with a shot of turbo cleaner in the fuel tank.

Safe to say this still hasn’t worked, run cleaner through the a tank of fuel and now sprayed some up the inlet. Back under FNS having removed the heat shields and inserting the actuator freeing tool I still can’t move the actuator at all?! ESF still reporting so guess the actuator motor is burnt out and that’s what’s actually siezed?! Turbo off? Help please...... I have not had the Disco long and seems they really are the POS I was told to expect Rolling Eyes

Stop and think about this. You place an additive into the fuel. How will this ever make its way to the inlet side of the turbo where the vanes are? It won’t. In can’t. You might as well just burn that money and save yourself a trip to the shop.

As for freeing the vanes? If you can’t get the arm to move it’s not sounding good. Disconnecting the actuator might help however to get more leverage.

The vanes are in the exhaust side.

I was doubtful, but the wynns stuff worked for me, either that or just driving it.

If it really won't move, get a recon turbo

Well a £10 bottle of Wynn’s was always worth a try before excepting the fate of a new turbo. Tried Freeing it this afternoon with a long metal rod and hammer on the ball of the actuator rod from inside the wheel arch still to know avail. Have now accepted my fate just need to know the best place for a turbo if I’m going to the effort of fitting one I am not sure I recon is the way to go?

Are you sure rou are not hammering it when it is already at the end of its travel, so it could need pulling not pushing, I used a very long metal skewer with the looped end opened slightly so I could hook over and pull as well as push whilst spraying lubricant in, tried WD40 at first which was rubbish so used a lot of XCP one which did the job. Think someone here recommended it.
 Must stop buying shiny toys....

When you can see it, it is close to you.
It then pushes away and goes out of sight

Been in there with entire can of WD40 and the “coat hanger tool” pushing/pulling and it will not move. Here a picture of the position it’s in, with tool in place.

You can just about see the ball of the actuator where I’ve been placing the rod in order to hit to try To get it moving, as I say no joy tho....

It look like it is already fully back and you need to pull it towards you.
I would remove the oil inlet hose and the connector as it will give you better access
