High pressure fuel pump concerns

Hi All, first post so apologies if this isn’t the correct format. Two years ago I purchased a discovery 3 and it’s been quite the journey… the latest issue is that we have a fault with the high pressure fuel pump. After driving for around 45 mins the car goes into limp mode, low mode and have all the usual transmission, gear box codes flashing up like a Christmas tree. Turn it off and on again and it’s fine for another 10mins etc. I’ve been quoted £1000 for a reconditioned unit, £500 (ish) fitting. I want to get it changed but have been told that whilst the pumps been failing it can eat away at other parts causing damage to the engine and it’s probably not worth doing. Has anyone heard of damage being doing to an engine whilst high pressure pumps are failing causing permanent damage?

Not me! as far as I know if fuel pressure drops the engine stops and will not start, have you had diagnostics checked for fault codes?- if so what are they?
When was the fuel filter last changed and was it an OEM filter that was fitted?
At the back on top of the engine is a Shrader(same as on tyre inner tubes) valve that feeds the HPP,check that you have a constant flow of fuel coming from it.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I’ve had diagnostic reading from two garages (one an LR specialist) and they have both come back with the same diagnosis. Receipts read- “Fault found was restricted fuel supply so removed centre under tray replace fuel filter, refit tray and test part” 13/08/2024. Since then the car continues to go into limp. The LR specialist then confirmed it was the high pressure pump. No idea which filter was used

If they start disintegrate they can take out the injectors, i would replace the pump and then see if the injectors are still good.
I'd be wary of a reco pump though as not heard of many good reports, should be able to get a new pump for not much more than 1k.
