Hey Chaps, how about some suggestions where DcNexus could go for great meals in traditional Scottish style?

Luca's in Mussleburgh (near Edinburgh) for authentic Scottish Italian Ice Cream - and do have one of the home made snowballs - a true delicacy.

The Deep Sea sit-in fish and chips in the Nethergate, Dundee. Is Bratisani's still open in Edinburgh? - just tell them 'hold the sauce'!

Thanks for all your answers so far!!!!! Great spirit
Now having only two weeks left before our tour is about to begin Very Happy Very Happy
there are among others some questions left:

Is greenlaning possible (e.g. in the Highlands??) under what conditions??
Having a roof top tent - do I have to stick to the Campgrounds?
I`d rather do some 'wild camping'......
especially far up north - any nice spots?

Thx for your answers

If you have some dates when your heading back down to the ferry at Newcastle, and you have a day spare there are some nice greenlanes to be had in the North Yorkshire Moors / National Park, only an hours drive from Newcastle.

If you fancy a day out drop me a PM and I am sure I can arrange a day out near a camp site (or otherwise) before you hit the ferry home! Not sure of any greenlanes Scotland but Northumbria is on the way and someone will know some routes.

We don't have "green lanes" as such, although there are many side roads most are not through roads and belong to the landowner. Some are open, others gated, and others gated and locked. In the far north you will often find that the main public road is the ONLY road in an area.

You will find many shops selling maps made by the Ordnance Survey - the 1:50,000 scale has amazing detail and shows everything that is there (except for a few military establishments). You can then choose in advance where to go, and you can in fact explore a whole area on paper before you get there so that you know what you are looking at.

Have a look at Multi-map on the Internet for all these OS maps electronically. For example:-

http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=achiltibu...20IV26%202 Sorry this does not appear as a link - but it works if you copy it into your browser.

Don't expect Internet access, or cell phone coverage, throughout the Highlands - it just isn't there!

Most landowners have few objections as long as you keep land clean and tidy. You can always ask first - if you can find someone to ask! They know that visitors = money in shops, cafes, pubs, petrol stations. Without visitors these would not survive to serve the local community.

NO greenlanes in Scotland whatsoever. Best parts are Ullapool and north, esp after Lochinver.

Mull and Skye are both stunning. We toured round last year and it was great except for the weather and the midges, although the rain helped keep the midges away.

Best advice i can give you is to get a book called "Cool camping Scotland". All the sites we stayed at were in the book and they were all stunning locations, primarily right on the edges of the loch's. Really beautiful spots. I've love to go back in the winter without the rain and midges. I'd settle for cold and snow any day.
