Hire or Reward Insurance

No trouble insuring £100k plus trucks and trailers, but having problems getting the right insurance to use my Disco Commercial for transporting 3rd party cars on a trailer.

Anyone out there that does do this for a living and could point me in the right direction please?

Carriage of Goods by Road is all well and good, but if the prime mover is not insured for Hire or Reward, the former becomes void.

Thanks

Dave

Had a dabble into this in 2012ish.
I am sure it was with Sun Alliance, but the broker escapes me at the minute.
Thanks

So many companies have withdrawn from this sector, LV used to do it, now although I have 3 vehicles with them, they don't want to know.

My broker has been trying for the last two weeks to find someone. The general norm is anything under 7.5 ton and they're not interested. A van yes, but not a Discovery, we even had one say they would insure a Defender but not a Discovery!

Got Adrian Flux looking at it, but would like another view.

It would appear unless there is a company that my broker doesn't know about, everyone is running around without the proper insurance.

I was insured, for the last 12-odd years, with AXA Van Insurance which included trailer usage. I have a Disco 4 Commercial.

I seem to recall though that was the value of the trailer and not necessarily the goods on board? You would need to double-check this fact.

Only this year did I go across to A-Plan but had not trailers requirements this time around.

https://www.axa.co.uk/van-insurance/

In the online quote, there is an option to 'tick' trailer cover.

Thumbs Up

Had a look, waste of time.

Will only cover own goods if running a business, not 3rd party, but you only find out at the end.

Whilst googling for inspiration on my previous broker, found something called quote goat.
Not sure if this will help?

NFU only do vans or pick ups when used for your own business and equipment, or commercials over 3.5t, so my Disco falls into 'no mans land' so to speak.

Apparently with every Tom, Dick & Harry running around in vans, many companies viewed 'light haulage' with these type of vehicles, as too risky with far too many claims, so left the market.

It is very likely that many operators are running around with technically the wrong insurance.

I have had a tachograph fitted, I run under a VOSA Operators Licence and am trying to do things legally, but there appears to be a gap in the market that others are falling between.

I know many that get round this by claiming to be recovery operations, but in reality transporting a vehicle that is not broken between two places that at least one is not where the recovery vehicle is registered to, is illegal, but no one cares until there is a serious accident.

I will be transporting high value vehicles and must have the right insurance, both for my peace of mind and the customers.

Presumably a Disco. Commercial is an N1 goods class vehicle the same as a defender or transit up to 3.5 tonne . I cannot see why they should discriminate against a Discovery. Is there a different attitude if it were a passenger vehicle M1 . used for towing.

"Used for towing and carrying your own goods" is very different to "Used for towing for carriage of goods for hire or reward" Thumbs Up
