HK Logic7 sound quality with different inputs CD, aux, radio

With the Harmon Kardon Logic7 system, is the sound quality meant to vary when different input types are used (e.g. CD, Aux, AM/FM radio)? Reading past posts there seems to be some comments about poor sound quality when an Aux input source is used - is that normal?

Aux is lower volume I believe

I think bass treble can be custom per input source?

I dont use the aux input on mine, its never sounded as good as a good FM ststion or a CD.

Analog aux tends to be of lower quality and (for some?) kind of low volume. Not sure if one can do much about it by default. In principle it should be possible to boost the volume at the source (or before the aux jack). I didn’t bother.

Digital aux is fine, however. So something that is on the MOST bus such as a satellite receiver, Americans call this Satellite Digital Audio Radio Service (SDARS). Or, in my case, something that pretends to be one and allows me to stream audio over Bluetooth (A2DP) from my phone.

The way the amp gets the signal is key here. If it's digitally, or via the CD you'll find it's a good frequency range.
Use DAB, and depending on the channel you listen to, the broadcast bandwidth can be very different.
If you try BBC, they still use 192kbps on Radio 2.
Absolute Radio is now Mono and a mere 80. It just sounds flat. Fine on a tranny Radio, but awful on the Harmon Kardon.
DAB is not all its cracked up to be anymore.
CD will be very good.
If you use a Bovee type Bluetooth unit, it will far better than using a 3.5mm plugin setup. Bluetooth is not HiRes quality, but as good as you'll get in the car.
Play some known quality sounds from your phone, and check the streaming quality (like on Spotify), or make sure your source recording is not a hugely compressed version to start with.
Tip: download Radio Paradise app, and stream at the high setting....you'll be sure you have a good benchmark to listen to (via Blutooth).

Interesting, thanks.

I’ve been wondering how a unit such as that linked below, would sound on the Logic7 unit. Looks like it connects the audio via either FM transmitter or aux 3.5mm cable.

Step 3
Connect the display unit to your car radio via the AUX cable supplied, or use the built-in FM Transmitter (upgraded for excellent sound quality) by tuning the display unit and car stereo to the same frequency.

I might be being slow here, but does the Disco 3 have both analogue and digital aux input to the HK Logic7 system?
I assume that the 3.5mm input jack on the rear of the centre console is an analogue input.
Where/how does the digital auxiliary input exist/work?

My end goal is to retain the factory HK L7 and DVD system, whilst adding in Apple CarPlay wireless capability and a reverse camera. There seems to be two easy options to achieve this:

1. Add a seperate screen unit:
e.g. https://www.bespokestore.uk/product/landro...4o2SjQtNZQ

Connect the display unit to your car radio via the AUX cable supplied, or use the built-in FM Transmitter (upgraded for excellent sound quality) by tuning the display unit and car stereo to the same frequency.

I assume that using the supplied AUX cable would be an analogue aux input.
Would using the built-in FM Transmitter be a digital or analog input?

2. Naviplus:
https://www.naviplus.com.au/online-store/2...p171351335
which I believe inputs via the factory sat nav system - would this be digital audio input then?

Now this sounds interesting - what is your solution? Is there something available that gets on the MOST?

The “digital aux” rides the MOST bus. It a source you access by pressing the aux button but as I mentioned it pretends to be a satellite receiver because that is what the car entertainment firmware understands..

As for the module, you can read this old thread, https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/mobridge-m2connect-170188.html. It’s not perfect but it is really nice and has worked flawlessly for me over the years.

And yes, FM (frequency modulation) is an analog technology just as the aux DIN jack is, too.

Thanks! Looks interesting, if I was sure I will keep using just my phone for streaming and navigation, this would probably be on top of the list. But since there now seems to be an android HU available that is capable of showing the 4x4 info, the choices get a bit more complicated…

Back then it was priced around 600-700 euro so perhaps that will also affect your thinking.

Most definitely. Considering I have just the HK audio, not the HK7, and that I mostly drive on quite trashed gravel roads - I dont think the difference between wired aux and MOST one would even be audible Very Happy

I contacted Naviplus Sales via e-mail to enquire about the audio quality with the Logic7 and if it was feeding a digital or analogue audio in to the factory system:

Quote:
Dear Naviplus,

I write in regards to the Naviplus for 2006 - 2009 Land Rover Discovery 3 vehicles <https>.
I have a 2009 Land Rover Discovery 3 HSE TDV6 here which has the factory optioned Harmon Kardon Logic 7 sound system (13 speakers), satellite navigation and DVD entertainment system. I am seeking to add wireless Apple CarPlay and a reverse camera, and your Naviplus product looks perfect for this.
My question is in regards to the audio input from the Naviplus to the factory Harmon Kardon Logic7 system. The Logic7 audio quality is excellent for digital audio input such as from CD’s and DVD’s, but when using analog auxiliary input via the 3.5mm auxiliary input jack the sound quality is significantly reduced comparatively. Are you able to please advise what sort of audio input the Naviplus would do into the system - digital or analog?

Thank you for your guidance.

Kind regards,

The response:

Quote:
Hello!

Yes, your car is compatible with our system as long as it has the same audio dash as listed.

Also, the AUX sound quality is typically as good as the CD player, and we’ve received positive feedback about the sound quality.

Thanks

It doesn't really enlighten me at all as to what input type it is into the factory system. And the comment about CD and AUX sound quality typically being as good isn't inline with a lot of Logic7 owners experiences.
