HMRC Mileage rate

Does anyone else think that it’s about time the HMRC mileage rate was raised from £0.45 pence per mile (originally set in 2010) to something more realistic given that fuel costs have doubled since then? As it is it barely covers the cost of the fuel let alone insurance, tax, maintenance and wear and tear…

I have to do a 72 mile round trip tomorrow and would get back £32.40. Given that diesel is now around £1.90 per litre that’s £8.45 per gallon and at let’s say an optimistic 25mpg that’s three gallons so therefore it will cost me £25.35 in fuel only… leaving only £7.05 to go towards everything else. So with insurance at a conservative £1 per day, road tax at £1.65 per day that only leaves £4.60 to go towards maintenance and wear and tear.. Big Cry

Can anyone think of ANYTHING on a D3 you can replace for £4.60? Censored

I agree that the rate should be raised. It won't be, of course, because that's giving away money to little people. Tax cuts get done to give more money to the already rich.

My observation with a V8 here - the government’s tax free reimbursement being 0.43 eur/km (employer can pay employee for use of their own vehicle without any tax implications)
AND with 95E10 being around 2.4-2.5 eur/liter
AND 98E5 being 2.5-2.7 eur/liter
EQUALS that it’s +-0 whether it makes sense to drive any Laughing

I calculated the cost per km was 0.396 eur and certainly driving any amount the remaining few cents don’t even add up for an engine air filter Mr. Green Mr. Green

I was thinking about the rate the other day. Agree, it's not representative of real life now.
I'll be driving to Ripon tomorrow for work, not going in the Disco! Whistle

Is it the Triumph or the Fergie then Laughing

^^^ Rolling with laughter

To be fair, the Disco is better on fuel than both the Triumph and the Fergie!

I'll be going in the trusty old (235k miles) VW Passat, which will still do about 50mpg on a run Thumbs Up

Isn’t that the point of the limit - to encourage the use of more economic vehicles?

It is a joke. I get company car allowance and fuel allowance. The fuel is only £83.33 per month (odd number and my "company car" is a Q5) and the car is £405. Hasn't changed in the last 4 years. If I claim mileage back form the company I only get 16p per mile. If I want the difference I can claim it back form HMRC but I have to send the original receipts to head office.
The only upside recently is that I haven't really been anywhere for work for the last 2 years.

I doubt it. More likely is that no one in Whitehall has thought to look at it at all.

I don't know about the 45p bit, but the alternative of advisory fuel rates have been rising in recent months: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/advisory-fuel-rates
