Holiday tour options - opinion/experience? |
|
Right - loose plan is to do another driving tour at start of September for circa 14 nights, 2500-2800'ish miles.
This will be our third such 'cruise driving' holiday (California coast North to South, NY into Canada 'circular'; Niagra-Toronto-Ottowa-Montreal-Boston-Salem-NY and a Euro 'circular from France-Germany-Austria-Slovenia-Italy-France).
Distances not an issue, done 3-500 miles a day no problems before and will be in RRS 4.4d.
Usually do a number of 2-3 night stops with some one-nighter's on long dash-day overland journeys. Mix of 'nice' hotels, budget chains and some apartments. Will be looking at Air b'n'b this time too. No fixed budget but first look at 'typical' places by each city on the plans shows cost range isn't huge with about £500 separating them all (ferries, fuel, tolls, parking accommodation, daily spends, etc.)
Laid map of Europe out and got three loose options;
1) Ferry to Caen, drive down France via Le Mans, La Rochelle, Bordeaux to Bilbao, along the North coast of Spain (SWMBO has a farmhouse in Gijon we can check on whilst passing) to Gijon/Oviedo area and then 'round the corner' down to Porto in Portugal. Head back into mainland Spain maybe via Salamanca and north up to Santander and then another stop maybe at Bordeaux before ferry home. Seems to be cheapest option
2) Pop over to Calais and 'turn left' through Belgium stopping in Brussels, through Holland , into Germany, Dusseldorf/Hamburg areas, Denmark - Copenhagen, and into Sweden - Gothenburg and Malmo. Seems to be most expensive option
3) Over to Calais but 'straight East' through France heading Reims-Strasbourg, Into Germany towards Munich, straight down through Austria into Slovenia - Lubijana and then Zagreb and Rijeka in Croatia and via Italy/Lichtenstein/Luxembourg on way back. The 'middle' option cost-wise
Need to research it a bit more as lot of places just used as 'convenient' distance points and/or places not been to before.
Any recommendations/alternatives people have done?

Did 'The Lakes' on honeymoon last year, no-driving though.
Had thought of going via Switzerland previously (and this trip) but expensive on Vignettes for 1-2 day drive through but may yet still pop up on the radar
