Hot water heat exchanger with FBH |
|
We are currently overlanding in our d3 g4.
Vehicle is going well and performing great.

One thing I would love to do is setup a hot water system.
I’m looking at installing a duoetto water heater but during my
Research I came across the glind heat exchanger water heater.
I searched the forum but couldn’t find any info on this. Has anyone installed a hot water heat exchanger? Has anyone setup the FBH to heat the water with the engine off?
Is this a good idea?
How long can I run the FBH without killing the crank battery.
Is it possible to run the FBH from my second battery?
Sorry lot of questions. I am trying to find my own answers.

I think you need to search FBH controller. Mods:
Front Fogs + Halos
FBH Remote Control
The 1st Ever RRS Modded Grill
Garmin Nuvi + D4 Surround + Reversing Camera.
D4 Steering Wheel.
Rear Boot Spoiler.
Twin Brake Lights.
Wing Mirror Indicator Repeaters.
Long Roof Rails
Make your own Narpy grill thread
I'm not scared, I'm outta here.

Sorry if it sounds like I’ve done no research.
I’m aware of the FBH controllers. That’s exactly why I’m asking about this. With a controller I can heat the coolant without running the engine. The question is will this be enough to heat hot water without running the engine.

That’s pretty interesting. Thanks
We are moving permanent to Australia.
I won’t need the FBH in that climate.
Maybe I can modify it to heat water rather than coolant.
Nice idea. I’ll add it to the possibilities.
I guess I’m just surprised nobody has tried this already.

Just to update the thread.
I’ve been chatting to glind in Australia and they have sold a few units to UK buyers who have done this mod successfully. Surprised it’s not here on the forum. But if I find out any additional details I’ll update.

Many boats have hot water calorfiers that use the engines coolant to heat a hot water tank and as this does it whilst you drive its sort of free hot water?

That’s exactly what I was planning with the 10l duoetto.
It runs of 12v and would setup so only while the engine is running.
This would mean that when you arrive in camp you would have 20l (mixed with cold) of hot water for showers and dishes etc.
It’s supposed to keep water warm for 10 hours or so which should be good enough.
It’s also kinda free as you use power on the drive only. But it still is quite a large unit to find space for in the vehicle. The glind type heat exchanger is a much better use of space.
They have different advantages and disadvantages and I’m still undecided.
But the glind is probably winning at the moment.
If anyone wants to weigh in....

Hi,
we have used (underwing in our defender) a swimming pool heat exchanger (20kW is only like 20x 15 x 10 cm including foam isolation and costs less than 100€) plumbed directly after the webasto for years. Perfect for showering, dishes etc and if you wire the circulation pump of the webasto over a relay you can ,using an extra switch, use the hot coolant of the engine to heat water without having the engine (or webasto) running, eg after a days driving.
The webasto has about 6kw of heating energy which is more than sufficient to have hot water, we have a thermostatic regulation valve plumbed in to avoid scalding. Yes it works that good with ambient water temps and a hot engine system. In winter and starting with a cold engine only using the webasto you need to circulate the water for 1-2 minutes before it is hot enough for showering.
pm me if you would like more info.
Make sure that the non coolant side of any system is self draining or you can end up with a busted leaking exchanger (read coolant system) in winter. obvious but sometimes forgotten.

I will say using the engines cooling circuit to heat a hot water tank will cause the engine to run cooler for approx an hour until it has the hot water tank up to temperature, maybe less if the engine is working hardish.
