following on from Al, if the bracket is bent slightly it may jam and not slide like it should when working on the disc.

Could be wheel bearing failure, check for movement with the EPB off

Al, both pads are wearing (excessivly) and the disc is stiff to turn. However, if I take the pads out, the wheel turns freely.
Just got back from the dealer who thinks it could be the caliper, but they think its an odd one. Unfortunatly they are fully booked until my car goes in on 19th and 20th March. They said it might be the EBP binding a bit and transferring the heat to the disks etc but they wont know until its stripped down. anyway they are going to order a caliper just in case
So, I am about to start stripping . ive got the new discs and pads so i can clean the EPB, fit the new discs and pads etc.
TFC, I get a faint squeek from that wheel in forward and revearse at 5mph and less. I have wobble tested the wheel to check the bearing but it seems Ok. Is there any magic checks I can do to test the bearings while I have it all in bits.
ThanksDuncan

Dunc, a further thought, as the D3 has ABS etc the hydraulics include various valves and pumps so it must be possible that the brake is being held on hydraulically, perhaps by a sticking valve in the ABS valve block....hope not as that is much more cost/aggravation to change than a single caliper but I guess it is possible. If both pads are getting heated/worn then the cause must be due to the piston/hydraulics.
Al and I talked about the EPB heat transfer possibility, we concluded that EPB jamming on normally results in cooked EPB in short order (we've both had that), and I wouldn't have thought it could cause the pad damage/wear just by thermal transfer from the EPB binding (given the temps the brakes are built to cope with routinely vs the EPB which >shouldn't< get hot at all really)....so we both concluded it must be the pads binding...Cheers

Yes.
I have thought that it could be a blockage in the brake pipe that was preventing the piston releasing, but hadnt thought of the ABS possibility.
If it still does it after Ive changed the discs etc then it looks like it will be a definate dealer job. still under warranty so no cost hopefully Duncan

Any chance you simply have a failed gator on one of the calliper slide pins? I've had a similar pad binding problem after mud and water got in and corrosion started (earlier car, not a D3). First the mud, then later the corrosion prevented the calliper from releasing fully after braking. By the time I got around to fixing it, the pin was smaller than the hole it was supposed to ride in and I had to get a new calliper anyway. the slide pins and the gators are all OK and moving freely, it really does feel like there is something preventing the piston from retracting Duncan

Dunc its a long shot, but the caliper is made by TRW in south wales, one of their QA guys is coming off to pass of the MY10 rear brakes on Friday, I will ask if it known problem, I may be able to get a caliper and bracket out of him, does yours have the std brakes or the larger discs that go with the Brembo's and which side is it?

Wheel is well and truly stuck this morning so I called out LRA who agree it needs to be towed.
Due to the closure of Hunters my normal garage MJFews is fully booked and isnt accepting any vehicles. However, a quick call to them and they are accepting mine
Sorry TLO, Yeovil was second choice if Fews couldnt manage it
Will wait and see what the fix is and in the meantime I await with entrepidation what delightful machine Enterprise deliver.
EDIT A Ford CMAX and a Merc ML ,
Dealer is going to fit my new Discs FOC though Duncan

Dunc,
Sounds like you are having a real problem there.
I changed all my discs and pads on the weekend. My front ones smoked for a short while but hopefully that is all the case.
I had new complete EPB sets ( not just shoes) for the rear but after looking at them I thought I would leave it. I cleaned them up and guessed at adjustment.
All seems to be ok for the moment - keep us informed of the outcome.
