HSE Seat headrest removal - advice needed
I need to replace a frame in a hse seat and have hit a snag. I've removed the cover upto the headrest and need to get it off so I can swap in a new frame.
Anyone know how to remove the two handles and then the headrest?
There are lines in the mouldings but don't want to attack them with anything sharp to prize them open for fear of marking them in a ham-fisted manner
Anyone done this? cheersA happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

Tanters,
The handles are secured by a single bolt that can be found be carefully removing the u-shaped small 3-sided cover at the lower/inner side of the handles. I used a kiddies plastic knife to remove these with little effort and little damage. Drive the cover down slightly and you'll find it comes away quite easily, rather than just levering it out.
Undo the bolts (Torx required) and the handles then just come away sideways. The top of the handle is inserted into the headrest, but isn't fixed in there, it just pulls free.
After that, removal of the headrest is identical to removing a second row headrest; one side's collar has an easy to press button to release, the other has a flush/recessed button that needs something solid to activate. The only difference is that on the front seats, these collars are under the leather rather than over it, so some gentle fishing is required.
Good luck!Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Transgenic tomato anyone?

I took mine of a month or so ago to install screens for the DVD player, you just need to be a little brave, but once the covers are off, undo the bolt and pull the handles out. Very straight forward even for a non techie!D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Regarding the rust, I've seen this "internal" rust on many frames and hidden construction parts in our vehicles. Seems like they will be eaten from inside during time. Not sure how to deal with this but it will affect all cars for us not living in a dry climate Especially for us who never sells anything and want to keep'em forever 8)

Do the leather seat covers just roll (pull) upwards and off? Just trying to figure out how difficult it would be to replace torn or stained seat backs or bottoms. Thanks!16 D4 Landmark

Mine came off easily but I suspect its because the frame is bent and therefore the cover wasn't exactly tight.
by 'easily' I lie a little because there are a million little filly clips and catches that hold the cover to the foam and frame which took a while (and many scratches) to undo. Eventually it just pulls over the top once the headrest is off.
Probably an easy job for someone who does upholstery on a full time basis.A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.
