Hundreds of dead crows were found..........

.......scattered on the A46 near Warwick recently by the Highways Agency.

Initial puzzlement led onto concerns that maybe they had died from 'avian flu'.

An animal pathologist has been drafted in to conduct the necessary investigation and any tests, etc. and it is good news that confirmation has been given it is not avian flu or such-like.

The report concluded that the cause of death in every instance of a dead bird that was investigated was from vehicular impact. The dead birds exhibited paint residues on body, beak and claws.

Samples of these paints were taken for further analysis and through scientific analysis of the chemical compounds they could identify the type of vehicle, even down to the manufacturer, that had been in collision impact with the dead birds.

The data showed 97.8% of the dead birds had been impacted by a large industrial vehicle and 2.2% had been impacted by smaller vehicles such as a motor car.

From this study the agency then hired an ornithological behaviour specialist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of lorry kills versus car kills.

The ornithological behaviour specialist quickly concluded that when crows landed on the road surface to eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow to warn of danger...............

They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout "Cah", not a single one could shout "Lorry"
