I hit one deer, one hit me!! |
|
Driving to the gym the other day and two deer ran out, lucky I was only doing about 30mph, one hit the front of the D3 and one ran into my door and down the side step.
I only got a hairy mud rash on my door and that seems the only damage!
Impressed with how quick the car stopped considering I have standard brakes.
They look tiny in the video and they were not large ones, but their heads were about 10-12" above the bonnet. D3 Tonga HSE 2005

I was driving though Scotland last summer late at night North of Ullapool and you don't want to collide with those big buggars. They will make a mess and there are lots of them.

Had one run in front of mine on Wednesday night driving through Glencoe to Fort William.
Light bar was on so could see 4 of them on the hill, 3 turned away, the 4th went for it across the road.
50mph to 0mph was done rather quickly. Brembo's and decent tyres for the insurance premium save.

Gives you quite a scare when these things run out in front of you. A95 last night was full of them, at one point slowed down for a group in the middle of the road only to watch then get mashed by a timber truck coming the other way...
+1 for the lightbar, only way to give the side vision to help spot them running down.

Scottish red deer aren't that big, not that much bigger than the fallow we get down here, it's Exmoor reds you don't want to tangle with they are roughly double the size of the Scottish ones DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Also got one on Wednesday night - a small red this time. Sadly not only did it go under the D3 but also the 12' Ifor trailer I had on the back which has much less ground clearance - poor beast was totally mullered by the time it emerged from the rear of the trailer, but thankfully was most definitely dead.
Didn't stop to collect as I had arranged to leave the trailer outside the pre-school unit that night - a shredded Bambi is not exactly what most parents would want wee Hamish/Morag to see first thing in the morning!
Sadly hitting deer is all too common up here. Probably my most memorable was when a red deer jumped over the hedge on the side of a road cutting and landed with two of its hooves through the canvas roof of the 2CV I was driving at the time (it was a loooooong time ago ) - deer survived, which is more than can be said for my underwear!
