I need an Ifor Williams trailer for my dogs.

Can anyone help as I'm off on holiday in 6 weeks and with the arrival of baby 4 (4 under 4 years now) i need to make myself a dog transport for 2 dogs to get us to Yorkshire. 8 x 4/5 would be nice but anything considered. Sooner the better to give me more time to make something up. Cash waiting.
Has anyone done anything similar?

Have a look on eBay. There are loads of trailers on there. I've been looking at them the last few days. Some nic box trailers.

Ifor Williams type trailers would not be suitable for long journeys particularly in the summer. Lintran sell purpose made insulated dog trailers as big or small as you need.

Guys

I've now got an Ifor Williams trailer and it has the mesh sides. Does anyone know where I could get a tarp made similar to the lorry curtain sides on their trailers?
I could then slip it over the top of the trailer and lash it on leaving only the back open. I've seen them around but don't have any idea where to have one made.

Cheers

At 50mph I'm more worried about protecting them from the wind than the heat! I can always leave the sides off if it's warm. Rest assured I am very experienced at transporting dogs.
It would be much nicer than traveling in the back of a non air conditioned Vauxhall Astra van let me tell you.

Paul, Let me know how you get on as I am looking for similar transport to accomodate my wife and mother in law. The sides would have to be removeable to get my mother in law in! My dogs would then have more room in the car. Very Happy

I'd agree that there are no issues whilst moving, as with any transport it is usually when stationary in traffic that problems occur, particularly if they are coated breeds like Newfys. Have you tried a agricultural merchant such as Spratts? What breed do you have?

I have 2 German Shepherds. I only need to use the trailer to transport them on holiday there and back. If we got stuck in a traffic jam the dogs would be the least of my problems as 4 children under 4 will call an end to play well before the dogs have had enough. Both are lay right now in the sun panting like fools!
Mad dogs but no English man sat in the midday sun!

Liz Colgan in 98 transported her Newfoundlands in an opaque roofed Luton van 10 died of heat exhaustion after being stuck in traffic, she was very experienced too, just be very very careful when using trailers that don't protect them from the heat. The cold for a breed like GSDs shouldn't be a problem but heat will be, but I'm sure you know that anyway. I'd rather warn you and risk irritating you than you find out that you didn't know, so please excuse me Wink

Thanks for the advice and no offence taken. I'm transporting two dogs every day to work and back but in my car. I guess I could put the kids in the trailer and have the dogs in the car Very Happy
I don't think the wife would go with that!
My thinking is if I can get a cover that is made up in sections I can cover the roof with ply and the front mesh cage with a cover leaving the sides and back open if it's hot. If it's cooler then a different arrangement. At work we have unconditioned astra vans with cages in the rear. Apart from the windows open on the move there is a fan on the roof which blows hot air in or takes cold air out Rolling Eyes or so it seems.
I also have a small portable caravan air conditioner so if it's looking like a hot one then I'll fix that up in the trailer for them next to the cage. We will be stopping every 30-45 minutes or so (at most) for dinner, mid afternoon sweets and early afternoon drinks so there will be plenty of leg stretches and the total journey is only 2 hours.
I can only imagine what an opaque roofed Luton van would be like in the sun! With no air blowing to keep it cool and I know how hot metal lorry trailers get I'm surprised the lady did not realise the danger.
