Ice casualty

So driving home seen a defender coming down a single lane track. Reversed and pulled in and she’s just skidded into me!! Gutted but at least it wasn’t my fault. Safe to say the defender didn’t have much damage as it had a steel bumper!

Young lass in the defender was gutted. Straight into our local Indy and he’s pricing up Monday, she asked if we could do it out of insurance and being a nice person I’ve agreed but it had to be who I choose. No point ruining her no claims, she just hit ice and couldn’t stop, to be fair to her she wasn’t going quick at all.

All on camera so no arguments, details exchanged just in case, she’s a local farmers daughter so I’m sure all will be sorted soon Big Cry

It wasn’t challenging at all, it’s sheet ice under the snow, she’s just locked up could have been much worse, glad I was pulled well in and that she didn’t do the full drivers side!!

With cars weighing 2500-3000+ kg sometimes they can go in the direction of the tangent in a curve especially in icy conditions. Happens even with studs on.

Hope you get yours fixed to as good as new Thumbs Up

Hi,
glad no one hurt Thumbs Up still a PIA sorting it all out sadly

There has been a few threads starting on here and over on RRS asking about "Winter" tyres and are they worth it Question

The defender is running well worn Mud terrians and for the conditions in your pic not ideal,
I know you can not say for sure but if had been using True Winters it would have been a different end result

Do you mind sharing the pic over on RRS ?

Thumbs Up

Hi riverblanche

Yeah it’s a PIA but I’m on with sorting, it’s in at the Indy on Monday for pricing,

I’m on GG AT3 whilst not winters they are a damn site better than what she had, I got up and down there with no issues and the top side is even worse.

I honestly think had she had more appropriate tyres there would have been less damage if not any.

I’m not on RRS but feel free to share it over there Thumbs Up

Trouble is there is no doubt a M+S on the sidewall, though this does mean mud and snow, without the snowflake the tyres are not a winter compound and are less able to grip.

I took my disco out last night and couldnt find anything to trouble it, though I did manage to get the center diff lock on when I found a hill that was icy after lots of cars trying to get up.

I always change to winter tyres as I find it's stopping these cars not getting them going is the problem. Thumbs Up

Gutted for you on the damage though.

I can't see the reg on the Defender, but it's pre Puma, so quite likely has no abs or DSC.

My TD5 90 also has no electronic aids and believe me, they are quite hard to handle on ice. They are great at ploughing through thick mud and deep snow, but on sheet ice, give me a Disco any day.

Hi,
its the stopping not the going that's important Rolling Eyes

In icy conditions like that if you treat each edge, of each block, as a chance to grip the road those Muds have 4 edges across the tyre Shocked your AT3 must have 4 edges on each block of tread = more grip

Good luck for Monday and hopefully a quick repair and settlement

Thumbs Up

I'm sure all the body shops will be busy on Monday with quotes. 25 mile round trip today on A34 today, I saw 4 cars in the hedges or attached to trees.

I was the 2nd person to contact my Indy today. The first was a defender that had been on its side. It’s leathal out in the Forest of Bowland, there only a couple of routes that they treat. That and there are still lots of folk that think 4x4 makes them invincible even to the laws of physics! Rolling with laughter
