JLR UK have confirmed to me on a number of occasions that they do not know anything about this recall, or what tests can be done. JLR UK are adamant that the only way to know is to strip the engine.
I am still arguing the to$$ with them, just for the fun of it. Mainly because I am 'speaking' to the same person all the time, and they keep on contradicting themselves.MY07 Freelander2 SE Santorini Black - Gone

As the owner of an SDV6 and a mechanic I have been watching this subject closely over the last year or 2. I have never seen a snapped crank from this engine in the flesh as they are rarely discussed in Australia for what ever reason but have seen and read about several through forums and facebook and google and I have concluded/speculatively
1. The engines are designed on the limit of emissions/reliability.
a. Lower than normal oil pressure
b. Very optimistic recommended oil and filter change intervals (It wan only 10 or so years ago
where if you didn't change the oil in your diesel every 3-5000 you were a monster!!)
c. Undersized harmonic balancer.
d. Light weight internals
2. Some crank failures are unavoidable - when factors line up during manufacturing such as the block is
machined at the end of a run before machine calibrations and the same with the crank and tolerances
are at opposite ends of the spectrum. I think these are the ones we hear about that fail at silly low
mileage and the rarest and don't necessarily fail in the "famous" spot.
3. The ones I have seen/read about that snap at the fillet between number 2 bigend and number 2
main all seem to have poorly bottom end bearings in particular number 1 main. I theorize
that the clearance created by this accelerated bearing wear for what ever reason (harmonics,
lubrication - oil quality/pressure/quantity/extended intervals/dilution allows the front section of the crank to
move laterally within this clearance, independent from the rear section (2nd main back) exacerbated
by the undersized harmonic balancer, to the point of failure.
Personally I change my oil and filter every 4000 miles with an oil analysis for peace of mind and watch my oil pressure gauge like hawk.

No response from Del yet! he must have run out of data It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,

Just spent north of 30k on a new (to me) D4 with only 13k miles. I was planning on keeping this truck as long as the wheels didn't fall off. This thread is frightening as F. I bought from a LR West London dealer as approved used. Reading here that if it snaps a crank, they won't cover it!??
Forum member DG will surely be along in a minute to tell you not to worry !
It IS a low number of cars affected (DG to provide link to prove LR engine faults are not the worst that warranty companies recognise).
And you've probably bought the best a;ll-rounder vehicle you could (DG will be along to tell you how much better the D5 is )
Welcome aboard ... just drive it and enjoy !.

I change mine every 6k miles. But please tell us more about your oil pressure gauge. I would like to fit one, with an audible warning of low pressure.

Same here. I'd like to hide one under the dash ideally to maintain a stock look but with an audible warning if it hits a preset threshold.Kev

Snapped cranks
Hi Guys,
Don't forget we're running a sweepstake on the number of snapped cranks we see this year.

Looking back at your previous post, you mention there maybe a correlation between faulty injectors and knackered engines (failed big ends / cranks etc)
Is there anyway to check the injectors on the D4 or monitor them for correct operations? Ive seen on the IID that the D3 did have some sort of live values for it, but it seems to be not available on the D4?

I think the only way is to send them off for testing Rob.Kev

Posted this in the General Discussion area as well but, this is from the Discovery 3 & 4 Owners Group Facebook group:
"A BBC consumer programme would like to speak to Land Rover owners who believe they have experienced crankshaft failure. If you’d be happy to let them contact you, please could you email anna.hodges03@bbc.co.uk within the next two days."
knwatkins, not sure if you want to share to the Range Rover Sport forum and groups as well?
