Identifying crankshaft fault

Hi, I've just taken ownership of a 2012 (61 plate) D4 but I've since read lots of scary information about failing engines! Is there a way of using the VIN number to identify if my vehicle is one of the 'bad batch' with faulty crankshaft bearing shells?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Yep. Its starts with DIE and ends in SEL.

I'm just joking, someone will be able to tell you I am sure.

There is no hard and fast guide to ‘good’ or ‘bad’ cars. The D3 and D4 seem to have a very low occurrence of crankshaft problems.

The D3 2.7 tends to seize up, the 3.0 snaps its crank, always in the same place.

It’s an extremely low likelihood, but when you read this site it can appear that it’s very common. However when you factor in that possibly everyone who has been unfortunate to have this failure probably goes hunting the internet for advice and ends up here. In context of all the cars made over the past 15 years it’s low occurrence.

Best you can do is keep it serviced and use quality oils and filters.

I’m pretty sure there is no recognisable VIN number range.
Good news is that there are many D4’s with mega miles that are all ok.
All I could personally recommend is an oil change every 6 months irrespective of mileage and become absolutely OCD about checking the oil.
Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.
Ex D3 and D4

Glad you're back up and running again - must be a relief! May I ask what sort of price it was to put the engine back together again for you?

Mine's just done 112000 miles (3.0 SDV) 61 plate with the 8 speed auto gearbox - most seem to have given up the ghost with fewer miles on the clock than mine - so my only hope is that I might have gotten away with it. Fingers crossed!!

As Gareth mentioned above, it doesn't happen to everyone and the likelihood is low but it does happen. I've been one of the unlucky ones as it happened to my 3.0, see my thread here:

Apparently very rare but it happened to my 2016 landmark snapped crank at 20 thousand miles, new engine etc fitted by land rover under manufacturers warranty!
This rare problem still exists and can occasionally happen to any of the
3.0 litre diesel engines in a land rover or Jaguar.
After mine failed I lost confidence in the product and sold it, still miss it, was one of the best all purpose cars I have ever owned.

I think it has been proven (by instances of failure) that changing the oil so often makes not a jot of a difference. Yes do it iaw service schedule and use decent oil, but more often is a waste of time and money as far as the crankshaft is concerned.

Changes to the oil make no difference, I have seen it happen to the most pampered and serviced D4s. The crank always snaps in the same place due to a manufacturing issue that JLR are aware of and clean oil doesn't change this. Buy a good warranty and forget about it.

How do you know that it's due a crank manufacturing issue?

Sometimes the crank does not snap and the bearings turn, as happened to me.

My belief is that the crank snapping is a secondary effect as a result of an alternative primary failure. For example, out of tolerance injectors causing an imbalance which causes a bearing to turn in the journal blocking the gallery and eventually causing the crank to sieze and then sheer at its weakest point.

Whether the crank should sheer at that specific point is a topic of contention and my best engineering judgement having looked into this issue in detail is that it is a design issue as opposed to a manufacturing issue.
