I'd say that whilst Ghost is a better product for preventing removal of your vehicle, Altox is better for many as it adds remote heating functionality.

Ghost won't stop the b Censored ds wrecking the car trying to take it.

Why not ask your insurance company? If they offer a nice discount for a particular choice, then that's got to be the one!

I’ve always been a believer that if it’s parked on your drive (so they know where to find you) that it’s best not making it too hard other than obvious visible stuff like a steering lock for opportunist thieves. If they want it that badly and you’ve made it harder they will just come in the house, with a young family I’d rather the Censored just have the thing at that point. Same with trackers, do you really want it back after some scrote has had away with it and ragged it to within an inch of its life?

Of course it’s completely up to you, just offering my view on it Thumbs Up

Edited to add - Any time I’ve supplied fridge vans to London the customer has always requested a ghost fitted, nothing else has ever come into the mix.

In that case I can understand completely, not something I’ve had to contend with yet myself - maybe my stuff is all too old Laughing

Personally, I have always used a hidden switch that means the car/van/truck just doesn't start.

There are many ways to do this, depending on what vehicle it is and how accessible the fuses/relays/wiring is.

I have had a Ghost on my D4 for over 3 years now. It's excellent. You can turn it on and off, place it in service mode and well, I feel comfortable knowing that my car will still be where I leave it when I return.

I take the point it maybe damaged until the thieves find they cannot start it due to Ghost but better that than no car.

I also use a disklok when parked on the street away from home.

My insurer (NFU) say they do not discount for having a Ghost installed but they do 'note' it for the overall risk calculations.

I had to have a tracker installed to get insurance with NFU but that must be regions specific as I know others have not had that condition.

I have a long list of modifications specified with NFU and they are a decent company to deal with.

On the forums on FB various positive comments about using Apple Tags with the sound deactivated as a tracker being successful for some people in finding their cars which have been stolen in the golden hour after...

Good luck.

Ghost is without a shadow of doubt the best.. whilst it currently doesn’t attract an insurance discount because it hadn’t gone through the Thatcham test regime I understand that this is shortly to change and insurers have woken up to this…
The Thatcham engineers love it.. I speak with them regularly..

Re trackers forget the wired in ones unless it’s a full Cat 5 system…
My recommendation would be for a battery version which are hugely hard to locate on a vehicle.. I would recommend either the Cantrack T7 or the Automatrics tracking device.. both companies have a dedicated search team to locate the vehicle in the event of theft.. both of these devices can be hidden deep within a car interior..
PM me for advice but for obvious reasons I am not disclosing on an open forum..

Top tip – live data tracking on the cheap - especially if the car is SWMBO’s and you are on a super tight budget.

Put an old smart phone in your boot connected to keep it recharged. Connect this phone to your phone via google maps ‘friends’ and you are able to receive real time location updates from this phone now in your boot if is stolen – ask a nearby 12yr old if unsure how to set up.

It’s not a slick or super fast tracker solution and insurance companies will laugh at you but it works. And it’s very cheap.

Here is your Ace card - when Swmbo leaves home one day without her mobile by mistake this will induce an utter panic. For her there is now a telecommunication blackout, a genuine panic that your nephew will be late being picked up from school/she will be late for Pimms/late for bingo. You will now be a hero because she just has to reach into the boot and start dialling to ease the panic of the perceived drama.
Insert caped super hero GIF here and reap your rewards.

This is the voice of experience gents... And don’t forget to tell her where it’s hidden....

Teltonika makes nice trackers. FMT100 (although 2G only so it doesn’t have a long term future) is extremely affordable as is the FMC225 (4G with 2G fallback). Particularly the latter, due to its small size, can be hidden really nicely in weird places. Thumbs Up

Notwithstanding all the experienced answers above this, I'm still a fan of TruTrak. They market the Teltonika trackers in the UK. They offer live tracking and replay of past journeys which can be interesting to see how often I get a red triangle for "aggressive cornering" ahem...
I also have a kill switch which is easy to set up and hide. There are circuits on the car which will not flag an error, but will prevent the car from starting.
Both of these used with a StopLock steering lock would make the car tricky to drive away. The kill switch and the steering lock do rely on a human to remember to switch them or lock them and that is maybe the weak link in the security chain.

As above it depends what you want a tracker for?
If you are looking for asset management for your own benefit then you can go as cheap as you like with anything that reports GPS/GSM.

My only comment relates to professional thieves are now widespread using tracker blockers.. these have been easily available for less than £15…

Thus if you really want your car back then you need to purchase a system that has multiple means of communication.. I.e.both RF or lo-ra and GPS/GSM which are far harder to signal block..

You also need to consider that anything emitting a constant signal is really easy to locate.. hence a system which chirps its location again is far harder for the thieves to locate..

Pays your money etc.. however don’t rely on OEM tracking as these are defeated before the car is even driven away…

Ghost on the BMW. The only disappointed thing is the supplied stickers. They are rubbish. Two small fritted opaque squares.

A Tracker on the BMW equated to a £12 PA saving so its was a no. Also know someone who had their M3 stolen which had a tracker fitted. The story goes that he tracked the vehicle to a locked industrial complex and the Police couldn't gain access until it was open the next morning. By then it was "gone". Assumed they had neutralised the tracker.
