Mike - on the chance that you drop back into this thread, what’s the rough cost of fixing timing chains that rattle on start up (could it be the tensioners?) and to replace a leaking water pump? 54 plate V8. Thanks.

New Zealand 2006 Discovery 3 4.4 V8 HSE Auto Java BlackDiscovery 3

Take a look at trademe.co.nz for some New Zealand ones. We get NZ new and Jap import V8's here with low K's and good spec.
All RHD and no salt on the roads here so rust isn't as much of an issue.

https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars...99ffad-001

For example....
$27,000 NZD is 13,500 pounds (plus shipping and import tax etc..)

Cheers,

Matt

So, I always was of the opinion that the diesel V6 twin turbo unit that lurks under the bonnet of UK discos had performance that Rolls Royce (who never provided figures for power outputs) described as "adequate". It can certainly lift it's skirts up when needed.

Surely if performance was the goal, there are other vehicles that will more than match anything any Disco can put out, including some others in the Land Rover lineup in the UK. So, I have to ask, what is the reason for going through the hassle and expense of importing a V8 version? And do the benefits of doing that out weigh that hassle/cost? I feel I'm missing something.

Probably because people want the option of a more reliable engine.

The D4 V8 and SCV6 have some issues with overheating. Also the former has a very serious issue with timing chain tensioners failing. Affects 2010-2012 V8 AFAIK but also RRS and FFRR. Obviously you don’t want them to fail. Kind of like the oil pump on 2.7 D3 - if you don’t know whether they’ve been changed assume they haven’t... Mr. Green

See LTB00474NAS2. I was looking at these on/off and this was from my notes.

When researching our D4 purchase I considered the V8 but was put off by the high fuel costs to run it and that from reading the US LR4 forums it looked like just like the TDV6, they had all their own faults just different.

You could look for the 2013 V8 unicorn, which was the last model year V8 petrol D4. This was my previous D4 (in the Middle East). 13MY they went to metal timing tensioners. Prior D4s used plastic, hence the failures. I owned that vehicle for 5 years and it was perfect in every way. Nothing but normal wear and tear items ever needed replacing. I used and abused it in the desert too.

Just keep in mind it will come with a very hefty petrol bill. Real world MPG was average 17mpg. Off-road / punting would dip to single digit MPG.

I consider it the best vehicle I have ever owned and influenced my purchasing a D4 back here in the UK.

Sad we have to deal with this SDV6 crank failure roulette. It is unnerving.

Give Kingstown Shipping a shout, I’ve used them a few times over the years to import old beat up VW’s from the states and Australia.

Can't help with your question, sorry. But, out of interest though, why? Surely you could just buy one locally? Or were D4 V8's not sold within the UK?
On a side note, when we were looking for our D4 to buy, there weren't many D4 V8's for sale. If I recall they were twice the price new of the base model D4 and an additional 1/3rd more than the TDV6 HSE model so were not a big seller over here!

You’re right - they weren’t sold here.

Here’s a random example of the 5.0 V8 for c. £20,000 on Australian Autotrader: https://www.autotrader.com.au/car/10868715...amatta/suv

Your right they weren't sold here, however I am told that a few RH drive were kept by LR as PR vehicles and then privately sold off. A guy on here told me about a white one that he knew the owner of. Never did trace it to the owner. Crying or Very sad

I think someone is going to pay for RHD scarcity with that vehicle... that’s ~36 kEUR.

A LHD D4 V8 HSE registered 7/2011 with 180k km (111k miles) went for half the price recently in Germany.

Advertised as "2019" but "Next MOT due 23/09/2020".

I bought a Japanese sourced MG RV8 some years ago. No service history but excellent reliable car, which I owned for some years.
