Improving radio reception |
|
I have always had very poor reception on my original radio and since fitting a an Alpine W502E it is no better. This suggests to me that the aerial embedded in the window is pretty useless and since adding window tinting it is even worse. I have checked all connections and everything is fine so I am wondering if anyone has fitted and external radio aerial to their Disco 3?

Blaupunckt used to make & sell really neat ariels that were wire wound flexible "with the wave" of required wire on a relatively short robust arial...they were also eletrically amplified....worked for me with low powered staions in Ireland.
Have a look at the Blaupunckt site to see if they still sel tham BREXIT - done properly.

Pericles, I have changed head units also, but never really worried abour reception, and I agree it's pretty feable.
I have the LR bar on the front, better if you have an ARB or similar, but either way, if I was to try for reception, I'd put a CB bracket on the bar and fit a suitable mast aerial and see how it goes.
A bit more fiddly would be to use the Sat Nav aerial location pre set on the rear of the roof, and fit and aerial in there.
A piilar mount would be easy fit to the windscreen trim, but you need a really good earth plane and you may not get one there.

This is the ariel I used - its got a booster built in so needs the power supply from radio when powered up (usually the electric ariel feed)

Yes many thanks for replies. I thought of using the roof mount but the task of getting a wire there and then finding a mount was a bit daunting. Also the fact that we carry kayaks on the roof racks makes a roof mounted aerial a bit of a problem. The idea of the bullbar mount may be my best bet as I have the ARB bar and it already has mounting holes pre-drilled. Will have a search for some aerials that would do the job and see what I can come up with.
Cheers and thanks.

The standard reception is rubbish. It is not until you go for hi-line and get the diversity antenna that things improve.
Aftermarket made a slight improvement but not a lot. But everything else sounded better especially with new speakers. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Just a thought Peri.....
I don't suppose you have tinted windows in the 3rd row? If so then make sure they didn't use metallic film. No tinting company worth a pinch would overlook this but sh!t happens.... What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

Got the bog standard radio in my GS and the reception is terrible.
Have got it booked in to the dealer at the end of the week.
They have already had a go at it when it was in for its first service and they
managed to fix the clock loosing time but the reception remains poor.
They have asked to have it for 2 days (?) so I will let you know how I get on. Something that doesn't drink diesel and doesn't cost a bloody fortune everytime it needs serviced / fixed. But hey ....I got a deal from the leasing company on my D3 that you guys can only dream about !

Base stereo is very cheap. Cheap speakers cheap head unit and cheap antenna. had dealer trying to fix on mine, They can do some software updates but in the end I gave up and went aftermarket. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I have a roof mounted aerial due to metal plates over 3rd row windows and the reception is still rubbish outside or urban centres. Aerial was fitted by LR dealer as a LR 'fix' for commercials ..... its ugly A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

The dealer had it for two days last week and it definately seems to have improved the reception. They were a bit vague about what they had done (definately didn't replace the radio), however it no longer just wonders off the station when it feels like it.
Only got her for another 9 months (lease is up in September) so I am not going to worry too much about it.
They gave me a brand new D3 as a loan vehicle ... it was manual .... I was glad to get back to the auto. Stalled the bloody thing about 6 times !!!! I Bought a D3 with tinted windows (which had been fitted by the garage). The radio reception was tish. Always station seeking, fading away then coming back strong. Understood the anntenae is built into the rear side windows. Checked around and found the aeriel connection at the top of the side window at rear (driver side) had become detached. Looks like a connector on top of a PP3 battery. Pushed back on connector and now.......perfect reception. Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio Wales, Heart ...........
The connector is not the best and I suspect it can detach easily especially when driving off road.
