Injector or something else

Hello,

I've been having some woes over the last six months and multitude of visits at the shop. I'm going to take things into my own (your) hands as these guys are just randomly doing things. My fault as I let them do that Sad

The symptoms:
- Main: Very rough idle and feeling like it wants to stall after the engine has warmed properly and was driven at higher rpm/speed (see iid screenshot)
- the engine runs "rougher" and in my subjective mind I hear more knock
-blue smoke when starting on cold day
-got loud banging for a few seconds after a long trip
-Over the last 6 months got the following codes related to this:
-P0278-00 (68) Cylinder 6 contribution/balance
-P0087-00 (6C) Fuel rail/system pressure - too low
-P117D-00 (2F) Fuel volume regulator control exceeded maximum control limit

What has been done by the shop, to no avail:
-Tested LPFP, OK
-Rebuild 6 injectors, no change
-replaced HPFP. Do not get the codes but the car goes extremely rough after a longer drive (see IID)

I'm thinking the injector rebuild was crap and I'm ready to replace one/multiple as this is the only thing I'm able to see on IID. The shop just uses codes to roubleshoot and live data is an abstract to them.

Looking for your insight and am ready to replace injector on cylinder .

Thanks a bunch

I take it those readings are at idle, what does the oil temp read when its warmed up.?

Yes, readings are at idle or with the accelerator not applied. With accelerator applied they all go to 983.

Temp once warmed up is at 80-90C, I had received one P code on oil temp sensor malfunction, but as it happened once and live monitoring did not show anyt anomalies. Probably have some logs saved with the oil temp as well.

Hi,

I'm not as experienced as others on here so I may be corrected but I think that based on your injector readings you need a new set of injectors.

To me all readings at idle seem low. I believe they want to be close to 1000. Maybe injector 5 is ok/over compensating for the others but if you need to replace 5 of them I'd be replacing all 6.

The smoke may be injector related but i had smoke when my intercooler hose had split so may be worth checking hoses to inetrcooler and/or turbo too.

Here is the normal behaviour, before a longer drive.

I would chenge the oil temp sensor first to see if thats the problem, if its giving false readings then the ecu is trying to compensate for that. Those readings are ok when the engine is on higher revs.

So, COVID put everything in "N" and I'm getting back to it.

1. Oil temp sensor - great call thank you, I think it was on the way out anyways. See log and the dip into sub-zero temps Smile

2. After changing the oil temp sensor it had no impact on the core issue around injector balancing. So the shop replaced injector #6 with a new one and at least no P0278 code Smile

Now the balancing issues moved to different cylinders and I'm inclined to start replacing the injectors with new ones starting with injector #3 based on the below or I need to get Cylinder 6 pressure tested.
Screenshots below taken mid may and today.

Thoughts? -I feel you are helping me play chess against the car Smile

Similar Issue, Engine Shakes at idle and reverse

Hi @pinchy,

Did you manage to resolve the problem? How far did you get? I seem to be having a similar issue. First had a Cold Start but battery major suspect. Other than that had a looooong set of ECM faults on injectors and fuel pressure rails:

Started troubleshooting both LP System and HP Systems and noticed a leak potentially coming from what looked like Cylinder 6 (RHD) injector 5. Along with a clogged body fuel cooler. Wondering if this are potential causes to the cold starts / judders / White Smokes / Rough idles or am I dealing with something bigger here?

Will appreciate any pointers.

Thanks
