We need a sticky on this subject!
Define "off road". If you mean green laning on legal byeways then that is technically "on road" and your standard insurance should cover this -even in your ford fiesta (if you owned one).
Certain specialist insurers have started including the term "green laning" not because it is special cover but simply to stop the inbound phone calls by people with SUV's checking if they are covered.
On the matter of "off road" driving as in (usually) on pay and play type sites..
This is private land, therefore, you don't "need" any insurance at all. Think about the number of bashed up old RR classics with monster truck wheels you've seen towed to pay and plays without mot's. Clearly few of these are insured for traditional "on the road" risks and if even insured at all will be on "laid up" insurance policies and total loss cover only.
If you "want" traditional road cover type insurance covering, say, a bashed in wing on a pay and play type site then many insurers will include this but note carefully the conditions, for example, my insurer include pay and play ONLY if organised events by clubs and groups.
Note very carefully that any kind of competiton insurance is incredibly expensive and any kind of comeption use will certainly not be covered unless you are paying serious premium. One of my client's has a specialist motor racing division and insure a team that have aston martin's and the insurance (which is total loss only) is £80,000 per year per vehicle.
My insurance company, Performance Direct, have a specialist 4x4 scheme that covers pay and play and additionally unlimited modifications (see below for my list!) and I pay £310 a year which includes legal expenses and full European Breakdown Recovery.
Edit to add:
Remember the term SORN and what it stands for D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten
RR Classic - gone to car heaven
Jeeps, Lexus, X-trails... Too many to name..

I only said off road meaning green lanes and pay and play as the last couple of years they specifically excluded green lanes.
That price beat my renewal price as do the others so far.
£800 saving. That must have been a lot in the first place.
