Insurance Renewal-Multicar policy |
|
Hi All,
My car insurance for my Disco and two other cars is up for yearly renewal (multicar policy, yearly payment) Being new to the UK I don't have that much experience dealing with local insurance companies. I'm currently with AXA and they have increased the amount by an outstanding £550 compared to last year! I am properly stunned!!
The Disco is used with limited mileage, as are the other two (Audi TT and Merc A160) and no commuting (I work overseas and the Mrs. from home) and one car is garaged permanently and the other garaged at night.
I have read several threads in this section and it seems that, as posted, there really is no reward for loyalty for staying with an insurance company
I am currently shopping around but if anyone on the forum has any recommendations, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance. 2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey (UK)
2008 D3 HSE Izmir Blue- South African Spec. (Zimbabwe)
2005 FFRR SC V8- Java Black
1995 D1 300 Tdi Blue - (Sourced from the UK, shipped to Namibia, driven by me to RD Congo, then Zambia, now retired in Zimbabwe)

Try Confused.com....to see what they are individually and then negotiate...
Though Axa are a strange company and I find they are normally pretty competitive when comparing renewal and internet quotes... it totally depends where you are on their risk matrix...although they are quite robust with sticking to their original quote...
A couple of my cars are with Axa but last year my RRS increased significantly, they wouldn’t budge and thus I am now with Co-op...
Beware of multi car policies...from experience I can say they are great for the first couple of years then once all your vehicle policies are aligned date wise they clobber you... I think they realise it’s almost too much hassle and bother to try and insure independently again all on the same day...

We have been with Admiral since my daughter was learning to drive, 8 years on we are still with them.
Last year when I changed Discoveries my part of the policy shot up, at renewal I phoned and went through the usual of going somewhere else, so had the D3 removed but whilst on the phone requested a new quote for the D3 and surprise surprise not only matched but beat the quote I had already obtained prior to my call, because it was a new quote for the D3, they then have to run all the details for the other cars through and this knocked off more cash for all 3 cars. All in think it saved around £150.
During the current virus have also had £75 refunded from them
So I can only speak good of Admiral

Thanks guys, you've been most helpful.
I've been looking online and, indeed, Admiral does come in cheapest at the moment on the comparison sites.
The Mrs is going to call AXA Monday morning to try and talk to them but I have a feeling it is a waste of time!
If the multicar policy is going to become a hassle, I'll look, as suggested, at just doing them individually.
I do enjoy the wealth of info on this site!! 2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey (UK)

Play them at their own game, go for the cheap multi car but be prepared and understand on the second or third renewal they may hike an increase...but if you are prepared then it’s not a problem and you can switch back...
Re Admiral they were very cheap but I had a total mare with them when I had to make a total loss claim after my daughters accident...had a long and drawn out scenario which they eventually won...so cheapest is not always the best!
From experience Axa were always good but NFU Mutual wins the award for prompt payout and less grief..

Bit late to the party but... just to mention as a lot of these discos are modified:
Some of the insurers that have been mentioned will insure a modified car but not cover the modifications themselves - i.e. mods are declared but not included in the cover. Meaning if the worst was to happen the payout would be based on the standard vehicle value, even if you'd spent £2k on modifications and declared them. Something to bare in mind with "standard" insurers
If not modified then no issues - but if you have put quite a bit of money into your car be careful who you go with

Thanks very much for the reply.
It is still a bit of an ongoing saga at the moment, as I am not in the UK, I got blocked overseas because of the COVID-19 lockdown and I am the policyholder! 2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey (UK)

Oddly have the same issue. I have 3 vehicles on a multi-car policy. Premium increased by Aviva to £842 this year and it's working out cheaper to insure individually. Oddly it's the V8 that seems to be causing the biggest anomaly. £300+ on a multi-car policy but circa £170 on its own with HD.
So current quotes are £670 for individual polices but with the benefit of around £90 cashback or renewal at £842 with a multi-car policy. Other multi-car policies were similar at £830 and £810 but I haven't tried Admiral

Happy to take a look for you if you can call in? It doesn't matter if you're abroad at the moment as long as you're a UK resident - we use about 40 insurers so do the looking around for you with insurers who meet our service and cover spec. Plus multi-discounts and club discount.
01635 874646 open until 5pm today.
We can call you if it's a UK number but our phones don't allow us to call a foreign phone number.

Found Admiral to be a total bunch of charlatans a few years back at renewal time - have had multicar with A plan before and currently have multivehicle with NFU - 3 landrovers and an expedition trailer all on one policy with no issues at all - all mods listed and covered 05 D3 V8 HSE, LR Passion tree bars, wildbear compressor guard, LRP switch panel, ARB rear locker + compressor, Trigger 6 shooter electrical system
12 RRS SDV6 HSE (Hers) - Gone and replaced with an I Pace - I can tell you now EV is not the future yet

One of the insurers that I was talking about above - had a lot of mustang clients come to us after finding out that the cover was not as thorough as they initially thought one found out the hard way unfortunately Howden | Specialist Vehicle Insurance

Well that was a waste of time. Admiral went into meltdown. Asked for a call, put me on hold and then cut me off. Website then crashed with please wait when I changed one car which is still owned by my Wife.
Thanks for the offer but if I have to repeat my details one more time I will scream. Especially when it comes back £10 cheaper.
That said it's far easier than PI insurance for my business. Will go with the quotes on Confused. HD, HD and Morethan
