We have the same problem here with Italy (maybe the same at the German/French border)
The Swiss plate have the Swiss flag since ages, still we need the oval "CH" on the rear of the car, and Italian police is quite keen on enforcing it (easy money).
I have sticker one that I can apply and remove when I plan to enter Italy(magnetic one do not work, of course)

You can just have the UK bit on your number plate can’t you, you don’t need the oval sticker as well do you

Correct - except for Spain, Malta and Cyprus who insist on the oval plate as well. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
