The pin out change was subtle and is backward compatible with SOME charging leads - genuine Apple ones mostly. Certainly my old Apple charge lead will charge my brother's I-phone but the newer copy lead (halfords special) will not.
Then there's the audio cable I have made by Monster. Works fine with older PODs but not the newer ones which seem to be encrypted from what I can tell. All the newer cables have a chip in the connector which leads me to suspect low level hardware encryption. How else could Apple license a socket? (Which they have done)
Experience of Apple over many years of suporting MACs has taught me that they are far worse than the IBM of the 80's were, it's just they're more clever in keeping it under wraps.

Funny that how it is backwards compatible with the Apple leads, wasn't that my point about implementing the spec right! Come on it is only upto 17 wires. And the license fee you are talking about is all regarding being able to display the Made for Mac logo. Legally there are no other restriction on making a device that can connect to the connector...Further more, each song that is bought through the iTunes store is licensed on 5 computers and multiple iPods...
I'm really wondering where you get your misconceptions from...And the comments about the machines being worse than IBM in the 80s  Jean-Paul

Whilst I'm new to this forum I've owned a D3 HSE for three years and I've just got a D4 HSE. Does anyone out there know why my car came without the iPod lead? I've had to buy one from Hillendale for £40 which has annoyed me a bit! My car has come directly from Land Rover on a 9 month lease but LR say it is no cost option and a box should have been ticked on the order form!

What a load of utter rubbish!
The licence is for logo use and there is no encryption. The pin outs are openly documented by apple for developers.
All apple have done is change from using the firewire (12v) pins on the dock connector to the USB (5v) ones. Some older Pods/iPhones need firewire charging, some can cope with both firewire or USB and the newer models will charge with the USB pins only. 2005 D3 HSE

You should have got it with the vehicle, but some early cars came out without them. Dealers were provided with notification, and the lead should have been obtained for you free of charge. UPS 2109-1 dealt with this; is your vehicle in the VIN range 513326 to 514661 by any chance?

Not quite true, Paul, in my experience. I bought a cheap AV-out lead from Hong Kong - $8 as opposed to almost £30 from Apple (although it included a charger which I didn't need). Worked fine with my iPhone and my daughter's iPod until I upgraded my iPhone firmware. Found a hack on the wonderful intarweb to change a couple of lines of code on one file in the iPhone and it now works again. That's not a pin-out change now, is it? Your iPhone firmware upgrade changed which input the phone was able to accept and presumably you changed it back? Out of interest which firmware upgrade was it that stopped your iPhone charging and are we talking about the original iPhone or 3G, 3GS? 2005 D3 HSE

Maybe, but it does support the contention that there is a chip in newer cables that indicate to the iPod/iPhone firmware what activity can take place (audio/video/charging).
Slightly off-topic, I also dislike the way that Apple artificially distinguish products - my original iPhone won't officially do MMS or tethering, as Apple would like me to upgrade to a 3G one. Yet like the AV cable, a simple change of a few lines of code and I can MMS in the 'normal' Apple way. While there's no equally simple hack for tethering, I use an unofficial tethering 'app'.
