IPhone X Bluetooth Audio when using Google Maps

I have a problem when using Google maps as Sat Nav in that I don't get audio directions when connected via Bluetooth unless I am making or receiving a telephone call. I get audio directions (via the phones speaker) for approximately 30 seconds when starting a journey until the phone connects via Bluetooth and then nothing unless a phone call is in progress. Any suggestions on how to resolve so that I get audio directions via the cars infotainment at all times would be much appreciated.

Not sure with google maps as we use Waze. But, on Waze you can go into the settings and tell it to use "bluetooth as phone" to achieve the result you are after, maybe there is something similar?

Will give Waze a try. Thank you for the advice.
