iPod does not work in the USB input.
You need the proper ipod lead for the iPod interface.

Sorry, I should have made that clear. I'm using the supplied iPod connector and interface. I'm not using the USB input.

Well, I have an appointment for next week at the dealer to look at the iPod interface. Neither my iPhone nor my wife's iPod Touch work. Just get "Device Error" on the LR4 display panel. I'm hoping it's just the Rover iPod cable and not anything more serious.

The biggest issue is Apple changing the pin-outs between versions of products. I have a Scosche passPORT attached to the iPod Nano fitted to the D4 this allows the unit to charge. It however wont work with my iPhone 3GS.
I originally got Scosche passPORT for my Mini Cooper D but found the Nano worked fine without it.

I've only had my D4 for just over a week. I have found no issues ith thr 3G iPhone working as an iPod.
Reading all the threads on the Forum, I was also pleasently surprised thta my iPhone does also charge from through the iPod cable.
I've tried music at 64k, 90k, 128k, 192k and 320k sampling and haven't had any issues with the D4 playing any of the recorded music.
I have coppied about 4G of music to a USB stick and again, haven't had any playing issues. the browser feature shows all the albums, and the track list works fine too.
I have yet to play a CD, or create a CD with MP3's on it mainly because I have more that enough music on iPhone and USB stick to keep me happy for hours. Discovery 4 XS

I have had some playback issues (see my thread here: http://www.disco4.com/forum/topic49422.html) but when it has been working the sound quality has been good and has played back a mix of bit rates up to apple lossless encoding.
I did try my iPod in the HSE when I demoed it and from my memory it did sound somewhat better (I was really reather impressed) than in the XS but I believe the sound systen in the HSE is a better spec.
Have you had any improvement with yours? Was your cable a problem?

I have the latest generation iPod Nano 16Gb and a D4 HSE (January 2010) - delivers great sound.
My only gripe is that, if you select a playlist or any option other setting, everytime you cycle the ignition it looses the selection/settings and simply starts playing the first track - selected alphabetically.
Oh, and that it doesn't charge, but I may solve that with a Scosche Passport adapter depending on what TLO comes back to me with regards to a tech note he seems to remember about this issue for models of a certain build date onwards.
I'll keep you posted on what developes.

I have now used a Scosche Passport for the last three days and since then the iPod charges and also retains the selection made in the settings on the head unit - so obviously the settings are stored on the iPod and not in the head unit and hence lost when the iPod looses power due to lack of charginging when not used with Scosche adapter.

My (new) iPod classic only re-sets to track one if I remove it from the car and sync it with iTunes. Otherwise I can take it out of the car and dock it elsewhere etc. and it always plays from where I was last listening. Seems to charge OK too. I'm using the "standard" LR cable so it looks like different iPods behave differently

If I plug my Nano in, without the Scosche, it complains that it can't be charged - I'm assuming your Classic doesn't, so either the Classic is still using the old pin-outs or LR changed the pin out in the cable. TLO is working on the later one.

I have a 160GB Classic iPod connected to my D4 XS. Pleased with the sound and functionality. One question, does the iPod continue to stay on / take a charge when the ignition is off / car is locked?
It looks like it might do to me so I unplug it / turn off the iPod which is a faff everytime I get in and out (I'd prefer to just leave it connected in the armrest most of the time). Anyone know the answer to this one?

No - it stops charging once the head unit/car goes to sleep - a little while after being switched off/locked
