Is rear air conditioning required on hot days?
Thanks to everyone for all the advice so far.
I have just ordered a silver SE Diesel which will arrive in early August down under .
At the same time another one with rear-air conditioning arrives, too, and I am wondering if I should switch to that one.
Does anyone without rear air conditioning have problems on hot days – especially in the third row? I can think of other improvements I’d like, but since my kids are in the back row, I don’t want them to overheat on hot days.

We are experienceing very freak warm weather over here so someone will have stuck the kids in teh back & had/not had them complaining. I only have 2 dogs who have not learned how to use the rear AC controls (yet!!!)
Mine came with rear air con and it is a bonus in the hot summer months.
I don't have the Alpine roof (lucky for me) and mine is white with black leather and it can get pretty hot but the rear air helps to cool the car down quicker.
I'd get rear air if I were you and we both are in Melb so you know it can get hot but it would be worse further North if you took summer hols up there .

Don't know how much Oz spec cars vary from ours but over here, (or should that be 'up' here ???) an SE level disco will have rear air con, it just lacks the rear seat controls but it's all controllable from the front. Just means that, if the driver wants to freeze his knadgers off, everybody else has to too!Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

No complaints either - takes a little longer to cool in the back rather than the middle. It also needs those in the middle to co-operate with those in the back - a problem with teenagers!2008.5 D3 HSE, Stornoway, Ebony

I have noticed that the aircon has to work harder and the fan speed is higher if the rear aircon is switched off - not really a problem, just the fan noise can be intrusive. Rear aircon also means that the vehicle is cooled relatively evenly. bear in mind that the cabin air temp. is sensed from the drivers side dash so with front only heating / cooling the rear will always lag behind the rest of the vehicle
One of the fringe benefits of rear aircon is you can use the heat in winter to pre - warm your boots and cool your beer in the summer

My wife has just done two trips - one in ours with rear a/c and one without.
Each of these had 4 kids and 3 adults - no contest in terms of customer satisfaction - the rear a/c got the thumbs up from the children - the extra compressor and the five addition vents really do help.
Of course this may just be me trying to justify adding rear a/c to an SE

Ours is ordered with rear air and from what the dealer told us its a good option to have if you are using the third row regularly. He explained that it adds an additional compressor and is not just the extra vents positioned in the rear of the vehicle.
They included it in our deal for an extra $500 on top of the $75,000 we paid for the TDV6 SE. We don't have the vehicle yet so cannot tell you much more at this time.
I'm with PCH & 10FC. I've got rear air and it helps bring the cabin to the right tem faster.
Anyway, i've always been of the opinion that having something and only using it occasionally is better than not having it and occasionally wishing you did.Have a nice day!

Thanks everyone, Looks like rear air con wins. Certainly also seems to be the opinion of my kids. Called the dealer to change the order.
Have to agree - better getting it now than being sorry later.
Can't get as good a deal as Husky though
They want $1200 extra for rear air con (Aussie Dollars). Husky, I assume $75,000 is SE TD incl. on road, with no other extras?

That's a contradiction in terms, at least with our two! Especially after beef.

The price is for an 06 SE TDV6 SE with metallic paint and rear air (drive away price). When I checked it was actually $75,500 plus the dealer now wants an extra $750 which is in dispute. The reality is it would have been better to pay the extra $1,000 elsewhere after all the delays and problems we have had with our dealer.
Hope you get your new car soon and love it like so many others do
