The Jacobite Steam train - Fort William to Mallaig
Hi all,
We're planning in doing this in October (We're staying up there during the last week it's running) - Round trip leaves at 10ish in the morning and you're back by 4ish
The trip looks fantastic, but wandering if anybody has done this and any tips etc?
Also, says you can take a small family dog - does a Springer fall into this?
Cheers

Great journey - but it is the same scenery as the commuter diesel for a much bigger price. And the views are weather dependent, so 1950s rollong stock with rain on the outside and condensation on the inside can make it trickey - take a squeegee!
It is worth driving out to watch the train at Glenfinnan as you don't see much from inside. Also, 350 folk cant get into the museum all at once but it is deserted as soon as train goes onward.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

Yes and I wouldn't do it by the train. The road pretty much follows the line for all intents and purposes. Takes a couple of hours there and back by car.

the steam train can get very busy so you may get crammed into old coaches....best to book in advance but they normally keep a few tickets to sell on the day but it would be early and first come first served....the normal train is just as good same view,,,,,the road to malliag is FANTASTIC.
enjoy to lucky devils

Take the train one day and drive the next cracking part of the country . Pic above from my holibags last year at Glenfinnan
The steam train IS old coaches. That is what it is about. But the passenger density is less than on the diseasle.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.
We were up there last week - forecast was crap all week, but was actually really nice.
We didn't go on the train, but did get some shots of it on the viaduct.

Cheers all
I fancy a train ride as well, as it's been quite a few years, but normal will do me
We may have to drive half way to Fort William anyway, need to check where the cottage is in relation to Fort William

My folks are heading up to Scotland for four days the end of this month for their 40th wedding anniversary. They have booked to do the Jacobite trip so I'll be sure to tell them to take a squeegee along!

Lovely trip, goes through our back garden in Morar. We'll give you a wave
Go on spoil yourself, once in a lifetime and the diesel is just not quite the same. Stray up the hill to the West Highland Hotel for lunch in Mallaig and sit on the left of the train heading out from the Fort.

The journey is worth a shot, but Mallaig is an absolute dump.
Something not generally known, the train can be stopped when it runs through Inverailort Estate. It was a condition when laying the track on the land years ago, primarily for Estate Stalkers with beasts who wanted to bung the carcass on the train. Can't think when it was last used.
