Jump starting a D4?

Came to my D4 this morning and the battery is dead, possibly my fault for spending 3 hours cleaning it yesterday with the smart key in my pocket! So I fetched my dad in his as he puts it "trusty Land Cruiser" put the jump leads on and pushed the start button and won't start as the bonnet is up! Is there a way round this or do I just have to wait for it to charge then shut the bonnet?

Mine starts with the bonnet up on its own battery power and I can't imagine why it shouldn't do so when jumpering. I understand that the negative cable has to go to the chassis, not the battery -ve terminal but don't know if it would cause a bonnet up problem.

I was looking at the D4 user manual on this a week or so back. Instructions are explicit that -ve cable should be on chassis point not the -ve terminal. Then there is a diagram which, to me, looked just like the -ve cable was on the -ve terminal.

You might have to give it a few minutes for the charge to build up enough to overcome the high current drain on the disco.

Had the same issue jumping a 2011 FFRR earlier in the year. Give it 5 min with the disco ignition off then try again. Thumbs Up

My Disco4 developed a battery fault last week at just 6 months old. Landrover Assistance came to check out a faulty suspension pump and left me with a flat battery!

Found it almost impossible to get a jump lead on to the battery due to the location of the terminal and unusual shape of the clamps.

Battery now replaced due to faulty cell, along with new pump!

Hi Richard and spot on the money.

It’s imperative that you do not connect ANYTHING to the cranking battery’s negative terminal on a D4.

There is some electronics connected to the neg lead and you need to do as stated in the hand book, connect the positive to the battery’s positive terminal and the negative to a solid earth point away from the battery.

BTW, this should be done with all vehicle, to avoid sparks occurring near the battery.
