Just how good are they at towing |
|
Not towed a lot and ordered a 4 as our transporter shuttle is awful at towing our lunar 650
I have seen the video on the LR site and it looks impressive
We're off to le logis du Breuil in July so that'll give it a good test

How good ....
When towing I occasionally think that white van man is right up my tail ...... it was only my caravan.
So much so that when towing on the tight roads in the Lakes I have to ask mrs ronp to keep reminding me the caravan is on the back.
That's how good ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Before I bought mine, I spoke to several owners on different sites that we were on, and all of them told me the same thing, how you can almost forget that you have got it on the back.
Since then I have towed with mine twice now and I am amazed how easily she pulls my van and can confirm that you can almost forget it is there.
It's a joy to be able to keep up with other traffic and be able to pull out past that slow lorry or car and not have to worry about a slight hill spoilling your overtaking maneuver, knowing you've got plenty in reserve under your right foot.
Travelling down hill also gives you a real sense that you are in charge and not being bullied by your van behind.
All in all you get to your destination, and start your relaxing breakaway in a far more relaxed manner.

Brilliant thanks all. We had a sterling 636 towed with a touareg and that was greet up hill but you did feel it pushing you down hill. Especially on the steeper hills on A30 to Newquay

yepeeeeeeee that sounds great
The main reason for getting our discovery3 was to make our holiday journey even easier with our lunar 546 (fixed triple bunk) which is not that heavy but still pushed our 330d touring about a bit!
After reading these its nice to be reassured that towing is going back to be a breeze Discovery 3, TDV6 S, 2005(55), Java Black

Beware when using CC, when going up a steep hill and it changes down automatically you may think you are about to take off No exaggeration and that's with a D3, D4s got a few more BHP
Best tow car on the planet It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Our fuel consumption goes up when towing but its the safety factor that really is the reassuring thing. We generally tow in lane one with the trucks, so about 56mph. When we do get overtaken by some large vehicle such as a coach or car transporter, previously with our car before the entire outfit would get sucked towards the right and it was a struggle keeping a straight line. Sometimes I was taken unaware and it was quite scary.
Definitely none of this in the d3. Almost like that 'van wasn't there.

You will be aware that around that towing speed the auto-gearbox will generally be dropping down to 5th on the motorway.
Can be a bit of false economy keeping the speed down if it's doing this, better then at 60 -65mph
But you'll know that

I've towed with pretty much every model of Discovery upto the D3 (not D4 yet), and the D3 is by far the best towcar. We've always had pretty large twin axle 'vans, and it handles these with ease.
I cant agree with Dadof 7 though, as MPG when towing isnt great, especially if you pushing on a bit (continental driving of course). My auto only gets high 20's mpg when solo, but with the 'van on the back (1700kg) I've been down to 17 or 18mpg. My old manual D3 was better on the mpg front.
but dont let that put you off - it is THE BEST towcar.
