Just picked up....
....brand new 12 plate D4 XS 3.0d and it's really nice. Done 370 miles and trip is saying its averaging 29mpg (mostly clear b road commuting). Need to learn how to use everything.
One question so far not yet found out. It doesn't appear to have any DRL's although the headlamps appear to have the LED's all there? Somebody told me not all specs have them but not even sidelights are on. I thought DRL's were legal fit now in UK???

DRL only need to be fitted to new vehicles ...the D4 has been out for a few years now so its not new G4 Gone ...but not forgotten

The led's around the headlamp aren't DRL's anyway they are only sidelights, if you have them fitted!Cheers Ian

Original post said it was a 'brand new 12 plate', so does that only mean newly launched/released vehicles have to have them?

I don't understand this as many 'old' cars now updated to run LED DRL's, including cheap Pug 107, Citroen C1, etc. but not a £45k D4
Given the headlamps have the 'fairy lights' in them I'm checking out if they can be 'switched on' via ECU fiddling etc as can get that sorted out. Cars going down the build line have a mix of on or off showing depending on market, etc. but as the OP I thought it was law in UK now so assumed at least the sidelights or low output fogs on permanently now if it was only higher spec that got 'posh' LED version
Odd law if it applies to only brand new designs as could be years before all newly built cars are lit up with DRL'S so is it being done in the name of safety or not?

Nothing to do with safety if you're a biker or pedestrian.
They're already starting to be a factor in a lot of accidents.
Should be stopped before it's too late.

the bling lights are only on the HSE - waste of time.....
you cant see them when you are sat inside and they dont make any difference to visbility or being seen, so not worth wasting money on !!Duncan

I don't believe it is being done for safety more about the 'look' for some people but then you don't know what might happen

Agree it's 'styling' more than safety and thus surprised its not an 'option' on such a car. Audi jumped on this bandwagon way before anybody else and charged £900 for the joy of it at one stage.....
My original request isn't for styling reasons but because I thought my car was faulty, as a 'biker' I think they are bad news but if it is a case of ECU trickery I can get them flicked on for gratis and next owner may think/pay for something extra they think they're getting

In all fairness, the LR fairy lights won't effect safety, they're not too bright. Unlike the stupid Audi, Merc Ford stuff that's designed to dazzle and hide bikers/pedestrians/grannies and kids in the glare!
Next we'll be getting everyone outside to wear hi-vis jackets so they cease to have an effect either

The worst that I have seen are on those small citroen DS3 things. Far to bright and too many of them. A hazard for sure. I cycle to and from work and dont look in the direction of them without a sqint as its as bad as losing your night vision. It also takes your focus from other things whether you like it or not They even glare in the D4 dimming rear view mirror in daytime (dont worry I know these mirrors are effective at night - I just find the whole thing really annoying - who would have thought - glared at in daytime)Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:

I'm totally baffled as to how road planners and so called 'experts' can have absolutely no appreciation of visual noise or how the human brain filters out unwanted pollution. The shear volume and design of road signs means most are unwittingly ignored and now the law is going to apply the same principle to vehicles - utter madness. Imagine if they changed the rules to make it compulsory to have the horn sounding whenever the car was moving... there's not much difference to the end effect.
