Keeping D4 SORN

We're thinking it may not be the best time to sell our D4 right now so are thinking of declaring it SORN until we're over this virus situation. We need the funds but don't want to let it go for silly money and keeping it off road will at least save us the tax and some insurance too.

Are there any possible complications to not using a D4 for a few months? Any precautions I can take? Thanks.

Hi
I left mine last year for three months. I put a cetek charger through the trailer electric plug to keep the battery and electrics up to the mark. The only issue that I had was the suspension had dropped and when I returned the first couple of miles was interesting with very stiff steering. I would also brim the tank to stop condensation on the fuel tank. Good luck

Did the suspension sort itself out?

It was quite scary as when we returned the MOT was overdue, so first trip was to test station which was 12 miles away. By then all sorted. I'm probably doing the same as you in putting Disco on sorn until we can go away in the caravan. Most importantly keep battery charged.

Leave the epb off just in case it gets stuck on

I’ve had my other D3 sorned now for over 12 months, I’ve got the battery on charge in the garage and every so often start her up to normal temperature.
As it was cold not so long back she took a bit to start but fine when she did 👍🏻

Over inflate tyres to avoid flat spots.

Clean car inside & out.

Deter, trap or poison rodents which might otherwise attack car.

A very good point.

It should be possible to reduce your (comprehensive) insurance cover to Third Party, Fire & Theft whilst the vehicle is SORNed, and hopefully get a refund.

There are specialist insurance policies for cars which are off the road for some time, when they are, for instance, being rebuilt/restored.

My previous insurers had cover called under cover fire and theft which cost nearly zero. They basically return the policy cost (I paid in full from the start) and when you put it back on the road they charge you upto the original policy expiration date. It sounds like a pain but it wasn’t and saved 4 months insurance whilst keeping my car insured.
