After using the search feature I have come here to ask about the key charging of my D3.
I have had the vehicle for 4 years and changed the batteries in both keys a couple of times.
Before I replace the batteries again I thought I would ask how I could go about testing the vehicle side of this system before I take the keys apart again.

Good question, watching with interest. I changed my batteries around four years ago and they are working okay.

for anyone else reading, the key is charged when it is in the ignition
so use the spare now and again

Worth ensuring the key is actually fitted with a rechargable cell as a lot get replaced if the key has a new casing - then more often than not they use a much cheaper non recharge cell.
Out of interest did you know you can use a charger for an electric toothbrush to charge them? Must stop buying shiny toys....

Show how as this would be handy for the spare key

The batteries that I fitted are rechargable

How would I test the bit of the car that does the charging?

Easy to recharge - you need an Oral B electric toothbrush charger - lean the key against it overnight and it should be sorted Must stop buying shiny toys....

If the key keeps working , the car must be charging it. They don't last long if not.

You need some means of reading "proximity" voltage. When the key is in and the engine is running you need to able to read the voltage that is being output around the key.

I see I misunderstood the question, I didn't realize the keys weren't charging

To clarify.
Nothing happens when I press the buttons on one key and the indicators flash once but don’t unlock the car. If I press again nothing happens. The car drives with both keys.

Not tried this but ...
Given a toothbrush charger will charge the key, then possibly an electric toothbrush could be used to detect activity of in car charging circuit?
Better still ... does the toothbrush system work same way as wireless mobile phone charging? If so a phone would show charging was working. .
