A few weeks back I was in the Cairngorms and miles from a garage when my Key fob failed. managed to get in using the emergency entry method and got home. A new key from Landrover is to be £207 plus £50 to reprog the spare one!!
I bought a blank fob and key and a new battery for £11 and a soldering iron for £20, all from e bay.
Today, I hacksawed around the joint on the fob and prised the two halves open. Removing the key and its bits and the electrical board, I then desoldered the battery, soldered on the new one, tested it - ok.. Popped the gubbins into the new blank and superglued it together!! Brand new ish.... Saved £196!! and only took about an hour to do.

had a key fob which held charge for less than a day and was advised by garage to replace rechargeable battery or buy new fob. I noticed that the metal section of the key was dirty, a quick clean with meths and a toothbruch and its working again 100%. Suspect a dirty key can't pull full charge when in the ignition - well work checking before going to the trouble of rebuilding a fob

Simonw007 has put a great guide together here - http://www.rrsport.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...20Case.pdf . I followed it at the weekend to swap the guts of my original fob over to a new Ebay £15 special and it works a treat.

The key blade is entirely isolated from the charging circuits - it doesn't 'pull charge' at all.
The only way it could make a difference is if it's acting as an inductor core but doesn't seem that likely.
Good that your key works now though and always wise to have a clean blade anyway. Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

I just changed the battery in my freelander2 fob, which fixed it. It is very similar to the disco ones. Both use the same rechargeable battery that become knackered. I made a video here

Great tutorial that. Before learning of the three green/white wire fix I ordered two blank key fobs from ebay for £8 in case it was new battery time. What a con trick by LR making these keys this way then charging hundreds for a new key and 'programming'
