Whilst we don't treat out children as friends, they know that it is a two-way street and they have responsibilities in the same way we do as parents. Most importantly (to me, at least) is that they feel they are able to speak to us about anything if they need to (and they do). We don't cross the boundaries into their social media posts unless invited.

When I was a child, I felt unable to laugh at any risqué jokes on TV or even mention anything along the same lines (partly self-imposed to try and meet perceived expectations in the 1970s). Our children feel comfortable enough to laugh at anything, discuss anything (and to smirk at my dead-pan innuendos).

They know that once they are at University they will have to deal with their own challenges as adults, even though we might help in some respects, such as funding accommodation.

They are very different to each other and one is desperate to be independent, the other less so.

(My son does need to learn not to search things when it is my Google account that is is logged in).
