Kelvo wrote:Maybe a silly question, but what’s the difference (Apart from cost) between a GEN1 and GEN2 3.0 engine?

GEN1 3.0 up to 2015 GEN2 3.0 2015 onwards
New long engine = £10,163 New long engine = £8,090
New short engine = £4,749 New short engine = £4,800
Looks like it's the "long" parts are the main difference ... short engine is £51 more for a Gen2 but the long engine is £2K cheaper in Gen2
So ... is a Gen2 usable in a Gen1 car ? I'd assume Gen2 would be ad-blu type so maybe costs are too high to retrofit all that entails ? .

You can modify a GEN2 to fit in a GEN1 car. The oil and water pumps are different for stop/start purposes. The real difference is what is bolted to the engine. The turbo (yes, only one) is water cooled and the EGRs have also changed. The injectors are a different spec too. Joe

Hi Joe/Mikey (or anyone else in the know!) - I have read on other threads that an oil and filter change after 500, 1000 and 5000 miles is recomended on some recon engines after fitting to vehicle, in your experience is this required on a genuine LR recon?

Short engine is block/pistons/sump/crank basically the bare minimum you can get.
Long/tall motor is the above plus heads/cambelts etc.
Fully dressed is everything you need in one package, also called a crate motor.
Do not forget there is a difference between recon and remanufactured.
Recon replaces what has had it and uses other worn but servicebale parts.
Reman is bascially as good as new.

Have you seen any crank failures of the gen2 engines?

It isn’t a requirement, but it is a good idea, definitely one at or before 5000 miles, the first service on most new cars is around 5000 miles or less. Genuine filters and correct oil of course to comply with warranty. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Hi I'm new to the site and was wondering if you any of you guys may be able to enlighten me. After scouring the internet for information on the differences between the gen1 and gen1 engines I've come across this thread which has already answered some of the questions I had. I'm now just wondering if it would be possible to use the injectors that are in the gen2 in conjunction with gen1 software. The reason I have these questions is that i have a rrs 2014 which has spun a shell i have and engine from a 2016 rrs. I've dropped my engine out have found the 2 sensors (water pump, oil pump) which my gen gen1 engine doesnt have, differences in egr and turbo water feed pipe on the right bank but other than that and the starter key lead being different that was all I found, so today rang a jlr engine specialist today seeking information regarding these two sensors and whether I'd be able to swap them out for a gen 1 oil and water pump for them to inform me the engines were completely different and the only things they shared in common were the oil filter and timing belt.. so the guy I was speaking to then proceeded to offer me a swap, I give them the gen2 engine I have purchased they will take my engine and rebuild it. I said I'd call them back. Now here's the killer I bought the car just over 16 months ago with a damaged engine (snapped for a very good price! I sent the car to a so called jlr engine specialist where they took the engine out, stripped it down found it had snapped the crank and damaged the block so sourced the parts and rebuilt my engine at a cost of £4600 now this wasnt a issue as there was still lots of +monies left if I decided to sell the car on but yo be honest I drove it and fell in love with her. She in santorini black, blacked out windows, black 22inch alloys I just had the biggest smile everytime I drove it. So I did an oil change 500 miles after the rebuild and proceeded to do an oil and filter change every 3k miles. I got a total of 11000 miles out of her when one afternoon driving to a motor factors to pick up some parts for my van that I needed some parts for when I heard a ticking that sounded like a stone in my tyre which I thought it was so didnt think to pull over as why would I, why would i think it was a fault with my engine, I mean it's a fresh build when all of a sudden she started knocking her bearings off! My heart sunk! Anyway sorry to go on I just thought I'd share my journey with my rrs so far! So if I can avoid it I really dont want to rebuild my engine. Time for a fresh start, a fresh heart for her! So if someone could kindly tell me if it's possible for me to use the injectors that are in this gen2 engine and get away with having them coded to my car or do I need to put my injectors into this new engine?
Thank you in advance

What is the availability of a new LR D4 Gen 1 SDV6 3.0 short block pls, most of the rest of my engine components are new, so doesnt this make more sense than a new crank etc etc as surely the cost will not be wildly dissimilar?
