Which Laptop would you recommend?

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on a new Laptop computer. It will only be used for diagnostics and internet, with the odd document thrown in. However, I do need is decent performance, good size screen, (15.6) or bigger. A back-lit keyboard, and solid state drive, with the usual connectivity such as bluetooth etc.

I do not want to pay "Mad Mac" money, so that eliminates Apple. I have a budget of £500 to £850. Any and all contributions welcome and appreciated.

Thanks
Den

”We” like the Lenovo Thinkpad family of laptops. They’re built well, come with 3 year onsite service (at least the ones we buy from distributors do), very low amount of brokenness. I think T series has 15”+ sized screens, perhaps some other series as well. I’ve got a X1 myself, 4 years old, been a few times around the world with it.

Wouldn’t want to comment on price bands as I don’t know them in GBP.

Thanks kajtzu, yes I too had a think pad some years ago which I had forgotten about. Unfortunately in my case it took early retirement without notice Laughing

I would be buying in Euro, but I understand most responses would come from UK based members.

Have a look at the Dell Inspiron series... good all round laptop with good support from Dell (your neighbour !) Laughing ... you can spec up what you want/need...

Cheers John, I had a look as Moo suggested but they are still crazy money for a used item, and appear to be outside budget. Nige thanks for the reminder re the neighbours Laughing I will look at Dell if there is a back-lit keyboard available, thank you.

Easy answer: Dell. Thumbs Up

Dell Inspiron. 15inch screen, backlit keyboard, SSD, decent CPU. £800.

Or a lesser spec one for £500. Non-backlit keyboard but can be added for £!5.

Historically “Dude, you got Dell” meant “good luck have fun” Mr. Green

Perhaps they’re better nowadays but still a few years ago they used to be rather plastic and not last for road warrior type users very long. Of course, if the device is static somewhere perhaps it fits the OP’s profile.

I have no bad words to say of Dell servers - just the laptops.

Hmm I remember swimbo had a Dell which was about as useful as as an ashtray on a motorbike. Still, that was a long time ago so perhaps things have got better. Mr. Green

To be honest, its not quite as simple a task as I hoped. The amount of spec choices is enough to send me to a home for the bewildered. eg. Screen res, Processor, No' of cores, Memory, Storage, Graphics, OS, Colour, weight, Features, and on, and on, it goes.... Confused

Preferably:

- i5, i7 will be outside your price range
- 8 GB RAM minimum, 16 will be outside
- 128 GB SSD minimum (depends what you’re going to put in it but that’s more than enough for a lot of things)
- 1920x1080 (full HD) display or better, 2560x1440 is probably too much to ask for
- unless you’re lugging it around the weight doesn’t matter and the 15.6” isn’t pretending to be an ultra book anyhow
- win 10 home or pro (home users probably don’t need pro)
- wireless is probably given as is BT
- wired ethernet might not be required

Correct kajtzu! although I can just touch a Dell i7, 8GB 512GB SSD at €999.00, but do I want to spend that on a Dell? I'm also looking at a HP with i5 8GB 1TB HDD, 128GB SSD. Both are 15.6"
