Large lumps of metal under rear bumper

Hi

Had a terrible noise just now from under left side of car, like a bearing or something about to fail spectacularly, but it has gone now Confused so fingers crossed. Had just caned the car along windy bumpy road with lots of humps where you can lift wheels off the ground were you to go that fast Rolling Eyes

However since I bought my 56 plate XS 2 weeks ago it has had an annoying rattle in the rear at lower speeds on jiggly surfaces. On having a look under the car for whatever was about to drop off, I noticed 2 very large lumps of metal hanging under the rear bumper on both sides near the exhausts. These lumps of metal (with the LR logo cast into them) sit either side of the ends of the chassis rails and rotate on bushes or a bar. On rotating them they bash against the bottom of the bumper and seem a likely cause of the rattle on jiggly surfaces.

Few questions:
1) What are they and why are they there?
2) Are they supposed to be able to bash against the bumper and cause a rattle?

Thanks
 Tony

hi
they are harmonic dampers and supposed to swing freely just like a pair o bo Censored ks
as for banging against the bumper imho it would take alot of bumps to make them hit the bumper.
take a look around to see if anything else is loose

Check your ARB bushes. There are various threads on here on how to do this as well as change them.

I had a knocking noice, notised it more at low speeds. This was from the rear passenger side and was driving me nuts.

I checked everywhere inside the car, the dog crates, the dog crate draws, under seats everything.

I then checked outside the vehicle and found the weights that moved arround, so took it to the dealer.

They confirmed it was the ARB, replaced them and the knocking stopped, So yes check the ARB.
