Laying up for 3 months.

No not in the wrong section, got a question on laying up a 2011 D4 HSE for 3 months. Not mine, belongs to someone in Da Family.

Car will be garaged and they were going to connect a trickle charger to the battery, as they have always done with their D3. They had wanted a 12v socket live for this but dealer said it couldn't be done. The dealer said for this length of time they need to disconnect by locking up the car, leaving the passanger door open, disconnect battery, close bonnet & lock passanger door with physical key rather than use the trickle charger.

Any thoughts oh more technically minded peeps out there, trickle charge & lock up as usual or disconnect the battery? They are not technically/mechanically minded and worried about the chaos that coud follow disconnecting for that length of time.

Oh, and before anyone asks, they are not looking for anyone to look after the car while they are away. Nice try but no cigar. Whistle Whistle

They're not too worried about the tyres, I'll get them to put them up a good bit, and they'll make sure it's tanked up.

What about using the tow electrics for 12V supply - details on here somewhere Whistle

Otherwise, fit a charging socket directly to the battery (CTEK do one) - Amazon link for reference http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ctek-CTE-56260-Dir...B002MT72YE

dealer is talking out of backside........

you could make the 12v sockets perm live by removing the relay and bridging it over, t hen a 12v cigar plug connected to the charger would be fine.

Or if its a Ctek charger, get an extra cable connected to the battery & run it to the front grill. Shimples...... Thumbs Up

Problem with that is dealer put the wind up them by saying if they did have the electrics modified it would have warranty implications. I know a crock but they are not prepared to take that risk. After all their first line of techie defences is to pick up the phone & call me. Rolling Eyes

Get a C=Tek charger and attach the tail direct to the battery, this then tucks up nicely by the n/s wiper where you connect the charger to, I have a number of vehicles and use this system, in fact when I was at a Porsche dealership just before Christmas they all do the same now on cars on their front. I bought the additional accessory tails with a charge indicator light built in, you can see teh state of the battery from the end of the tail so know whether it needs plugged in or not Thumbs Up

http://www.ctekchargers.co.uk/ctek-mxs-70.php (maybe cheaper on the bay)

Well in that case, I can see no way of keeping the battery charged up in situ.

Guess it's RTFM (no offence!) and see what it says about battery charging/vehicle storage. Or contact LR Customer Care for the official line.

This is my 'tail', it is tucked under the bonnet so not seen, but I pulled it up to show you Wink

All I would do now is plug the charger into that tail, job done, been doing it for years not one problem on any vehicle including a motorhome that can sit for more than 3 months.

My first suggestion was RTFM, great minds etc. The trickle charger they have was fine on the D3 & they are hoping it's fine for the D4. They have a http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=138839 but unsure about leaving it connected for that long.

Why oh why did I point them in the direction of LRs (back in the distant past) as this all becomes my fault! Big Cry Big Cry

Even one of these would do the job, it is just topping up the juice used by the alarm system, I would trust c-tek for a long term trickle with their smart charge technology but would be concerned about some others Wink
