I'll start by saying I have no caravan but was intrigued by the posting.
why would auto-reverse still work with handbrake on ? surely you'd never be reversing with handbrake applied ?
if it's not an adjustment issue, chocks sound mightily sensible ! .

Simply put, it is things happening in a different sequence.
Reverse first - that has to disengage the brake that would normally come on as the trailer pushes a slowing down (braking) tow vehicle.
Handbrake second - then does nothing as shoes have disengaged. A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

I have to admit, I can't visualise how this works either, or more so why it would be made possible to do this through the design of the mechanism. As above, if the handbrake is on, all auto-reverse mechanisms should be disengaged, regardless of hitch extension or anything else. Sounds very dangerous D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

This makes more sense - so if you have reversed a caravan into a spot, you should always drive forward a little to make sure auto-reverse is now 'switched off' and the handbrake will be effective? D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

I can't really explain it either, but all I can say is that in my particular set of circumstances it happened. I posted it as a heads up for anyone interested. In future, I will be using MM and chocks as well. There are two rules for success,
1. Never tell everything you know.

and in scenario we're talking about, if car was uphill of tintent, surely that's same as pulling forwards to disable auto-reverse brakes ?
is it just something sticking ? .

sorry for you, Madrilleno,
This auto-reversing system is, in my opinion, a real danger, because there is a least one
possibility ( maybe more) that the brakes don't apply when unhitching.
I could'n give a sh if it makes reversing easier or how it is supposed to work, regarding brakes the system should be ( stupid proof ).
After more then 40 years towing trailers, caravanes, horse boxes, Is till don't understand how such a
dangerous system got approved and is still used.
I always try to tell people, NEVER unhitch without blocks at the wheels on a ground that is not level.
Mind you, hand brake it self, ( for any vehicle ) is never 100% safe, how can you be sure that the brakes apply properly ?
