LED Lights on the xs
Does anybody know how to activate the Daytime running lamps??.It seems they are connected but not activated

DRL are turned on with the magic box viw the likes of Wiggs. The DRL on D4's are actually the main headlights and not the fairy lights. The fairy lights are only fitted to the HSEsMY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

I found this while looking for an answer it just makes you wonder.
It is incomprehensible that a vehicle fitted with DLR's that will be law in 2012 as a safety feature has such lights that do not work.

Not quite.....
As Russell said, all D3s and D4s have ALWAYS been had the ability to use DRLs. They use the dipped headlamp beam and need to be activated in the CCF (Car Configuration File) for them to automatically turn on with the engine running.
The LED "fairy lights" are not, and have never been, DRLs. They are simply sidelights and do not comply with the ECE regulations for use as DRLs. Land Rover has never said that they do and has never sold them as such.
With regards to the EC directive regarding DRLs:
It was actually this year 07/02/2011 that the new directive for DRLs came into force and it ONLY applies to the Type Approval of new vehicles - not existing vehicles. The 2012 date that you quoted is actually 07/08/2012 and is the cut-off date for type approval of buses and HGVs etc.
If a vehicle is presented for homologation/Type Approval without a DRL system enabled/fitted (complying with ECE regulation R87) after this date then the approval will be rejected.
The D4 was type approved back in 2009 (ISTR) so is completely exempt from this regulation.
In other words:
- "By law" your D4 does not need to have DRLs.
- Your D4 already has a DRL function in place which uses the dipped beam headlamps and meets the new regulations (although due to the above point, it is deactivated by default in some/most markets including the UK)
- By modifying the CCF, your dealer (or someone with adequate diagnostic equipment) can activate the DRL feature for you at any time.
- The LED sidelights are not, and have nothing to do with, DRLs - they are simply fancy sidelights.
- Saying this, if your XS is fitted with halogen headlamps, then you don't have the LED sidelights fitted anyway. As Russell said, they only come fitted to bi-xenon headlamps. The halogen ones just have the "look-a-like" lens cover, but nothing fitted behind them.

The truth is that, in my opinion, LR "dropped a b0llock" big time when they introduced the fairy lights....Audi have been fitting similar lights for a long time that DO comply with R87 and can be used as DRLs and when LR started selling the D4 with these lights, people thought that they were DRLs and wanted to know why they didn't work. They should have cleared this up but haven't deemed it necessary.
There have been lots of new D4 owners on here asking the same questions as you so it's clear that there is a general confusion and dissappointment that hasn't been addressed by the manufacturer or the supplying dealer.

Very comprehensive.....except there are cars with halogens and LEDs. Mine is one of them, as are all the other Landmarks and some of the XS spec cars coming off the line.

Hello all. Im new here, perhaps I ought to be posting in the welcome section I know.. BUT I saw this post after google search on DRL's.. I just picked up MY59 XS and wanted to know how to get the "fairy lights working as DRL's.. Is there someone here who can offer a Bi-Xenon light fitment exchange as i have the halogen ones and who is able to activate these fairy lights...?

Er they look like they are halogen D4 lights not xenons
The label clearly says "halogen non levelled" and "H7 H7" referring to the H7 halogen bulb used in the dipped and main beam.
On a D4 the halogens and xenons look identical when not turned on (unlike a D3 where the fish eye lens clearly identifies it as a xenon).

Indeed, but I don't think any markets had xenons (d3s) without fairy lights.

The deceiving so and so's, that explains why one failed and had to have a new bulb fitted under warranty as they would not supply a bulb on its own for him to fit. Just shows how much the xenon's on his old 8 year old D3 must have deteriorated for him not to have been able to tell the difference.
I thought the halogen label referred to the long range full beam lamp, I will just keep quite about it as I don't want to upset him as he still thinks he's got xenon's. It can when others can't,
