Importing a Discovery 1.

My son is exploring the possibility of importing a Discovery 1 from Japan.
The examples we've seen on line "appear" to be immaculate with almost rust free chassis.
Is this possible?
Or are the dark arts at work?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thumbs Up

Believe they are usually all mint underneath as the Japanese dont use road salt on the roads.
Drive on the same side as us so right hand drive
Think they are all petrol models but stand to be corrected

I think you're right re petrol only.
My understanding is that they are becoming collectors items - if they are so nice (and they certainly look it) - just wondering what the catch, if any, is?

See https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk.
I have registered an ex USA bike with no problems , but I didn't import myself so it came with a NOVA.
The main thing is to have all the correct paperwork.
Discovery owners club might be a port of call https://www.discoveryownersclub.org/ , someone may have already imported one.

You will also need to consider the Vat & Import duties that need to be paid on arrival.

I think you may need a UK Certificate of conformity too.

Just my two pennies.

It's worth contacting your insurance company and ask there opinion as to any issues re insuring an imported vehicle. Thumbs Up

Will this be a personal import or one bought from a U.K. company specialising in importing cars from Japan to the U.K?

With the latter at least you know the U.K. price up front.

Personal import than how is it going to be transported? Inside a container or RoRo? Implication on transport costs. Who will do the clearance in UK. This can have implications on duty and VAT plus other charges. Find an experienced agent who has experience on this and can give a reasonable estimate of costs.

We recently imported some gear from China which come via FedEx. They charged us roughly 70% duty and VAT of cost of goods and transport. Despite showing their figures were wrong after 6 months they closed the case. Since it was VAT we can reclaim the VAT as we are VAT registered however if we were private individual it would have been OUCH.

So check likely import costs before going ahead!

Every single Mazda bongo or Ford freda in this country has been imported from Japan and there are tons of them about. When they arrive, most are immaculate, but after a few winters here, the wheel arches and sills rot through.

There are lots of companies who specialise in importing them, but I know a few people have done it themselves. As for the cost, no idea.

Dont forget that they will have the speedo in km/h only & the radio will need 'chipping' or replaceing as the UK/EU & JAP freqs are different...
Also factor in for a full chassis waxoyl or similar if you want to 'nice'.
 Currently D3-less, looking for D4....
reverted back to D1 V8

Doesn't matter if the speedo is in km/h as long as it's a working speedo. My Australian D3 has passed 3 MOT's with only km/h on the speedo.
