My fitting instructions on my Expo says MAX 54.3kg

http://www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/extfree...Expedition Roofrack DOC.pdf

Tis always best to try and keep the weight down low on the centre of gravity, too much up too is'nt best.

I plan to have either a Front Runner or Big Country roof rack fitted before my June Bots trip. The family roof top tent that I am eyeing weighs 92kg. So if your 120kg is safe the setup should work.

On page 200 of my 07 MY Owner's Handbook (under "Towing", strangely) the figure of 75kg is given for on-road use, and 165lbs for off-road. Their use of units of measurement, but it works out the same. This is to include weight of the roof rack.

At that rate one could not carry even a M.I.L. Rolling with laughter

Sandton LR confirmed that maximum is 75Kg and for "emergency" 150Kg Rolling Eyes

On our recent trip I was amazed how stable the D3 is with RTT and couple of other things (guess +- 90Kg in total) on the roof. Downside is that one forgets about this and stability control is a friendly reminder Thumbs Up

Same load on the Defender and it's immediately felt - driving out the drive-way Rolling with laughter

I weighed two roof bars, a small Thule basket and two tie down straps. Total weight is 13kg - so that leaves only about 62kg for recommended loading.

Bringing up an old thread here but,

Regarding the FR rails for heavy loads. How important is it to have them and why?

I have the Land Rover extended rails on the vehicle. Would it work safely?

I'm also in this predicament of 'overloading' the rack..75 kgs means the rack and a featherweight tent only!
I still need fuel and a wheel up there.

Anyone do an external, non roofrack carrier for fuel?

Reality is different from recomended; LR challenge vehicles clearly had more than the recomended on the roof. Just remember the centre of gravity changes and drive accordingly.

How many people are going to sleep in the roof top tent? What about their weight?

I shouldn't think that they will be using the roof tent while the disco is moving - they are talking weight limits in the scope of altering the behaviour of the disco, not what the roof can actually take.

Anyhow, 75kg is plenty for me, 1 x spare wheel and tyre 20kg ish, oztent 25kg ish, rack 10kg leaving 20kg spare - 20 litres of fuel if needed. I do realise other peeps may have a roof tent but just trying to add balance in arguing that the weight limit can be ok for some Smile

I think the weights quoted are for a moving vehicle where the weight imposes stress on the body, a stationary vehicle can stand much more weight, just remember to get the wife out of the roof tent before you drive away in the morning.
