The wheel nut has an outer and inner part, only the inner part will turn the nut.
If you dont put the socket fully on it wont engage in the grooves on both parts and only the outer section turns but will not release the nut.
If you look at your wheel nut make sure the groves are aligned in both the inner and outer part, you nay need to turn the outer part to get it to realign. Then push the socket fully on and try undoing them.
Even when they are new the socket only just engages on the inner part and once they get worn you end up with it slipping off.
As said before just replace them with normal nuts and save yourself future problems

Think there are a couple of posts Stew on here of how to get the cover off the locker. I recently had the same problem with one of the ordinary nuts where the outer shell separated but unfortunately for me couldnt get the halfords socket back off to strip the outer shell. After several hours had to grind the socket off without damaging the wheels and them halfords pro tools are strong!
