Locking Wheel Nuts

I know that a few D3 owners have hit problems, but I've just suffered a failure of a locking nut on an 18mth old D4!!

3 wheels are fine, but one which had suffered a puncture and had the wheel changed by LandroverAssist now won't come off! - the locking nut top just spins, which I think is the classic sign of the two parts no longer connecting to each other!

Completely unacceptable at this age, and points to either a design fault or manufacturing issue - fortunately car is under warranty - AA came out and were unable to fix it but indicated that some garages had a "one use" nut tool which removed the nut.

Anyone else had this problem with the D4 yet?, and any insight as to cause or solution?

The D3 and the D4 use the same type locking nut... And with the same point of failure... Ie the steel part gets chewed up and the outer hardened steel part just spins with the socket adapter....there is a way to get them off but carefully as to not damage the wheel.... Iv'e had to do this and it took me an hour snd a half, but now i know the way it could be done in less than half hour
If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

I'd go back to dealer and get them to do it. Must be under warranty.

Then, buy an extra 4 non-locking nuts and chuck the locking ones in the skip...

Thumbs Up In the six years I've been on this site, I don't recall one instance of wheel theft from hubs, but plenty of spares going "walkies".

All dealer fit options fitted within 1 month of purchase of the vehicle from new, carry the same warranty as the vehicle.

Locking wheel nuts are on the vehicke from new, so I would get LRA out to fix it! Thumbs Up

Dave - I think they are standard on the HSE?, and that accessories fitted at the time of purchase (or within 1 month) are in any event covered by the vehicle warranty; just from memory though!!, will have to look at the warranty book.
Thanks

Censored to 12 month warranty. These locking nuts were designed by an inbred halfwit and made of metal a sardine can would be embarrassed of.

Its a product and must be fit for purpose and of merchantable quality. These D3/D4 nuts are neither so get down to your dealer and start kicking off!

The fact that LR are still fitting them to D4's suggests a dearth of competent engineers at JLR, just too many poncey designers.

Re: Locking Wheel Nuts

Unnecessary quote removed

Hello ecosse
AA are talking rubbish, The locking wheel nuts can be removed by a Dynomec Kit (manufactured in Castleford and will remove any locking nut at only £20 for first nut or £10 for more)
http://www.dynomec.co.uk/
They supply the kit to the AA, he probably did not have the correct adaptor in his kit.
I had a knackered locking nut, contacted dynomec and they came in on a saturday morning ,especially just to remove my locking nut, took 2minutes.
If you contact them they should let you know if any one local has one.

Was that on a D3/D4 that you had it used? Strange that LRA(AA) didn't use it & the dealer is talking about using a chisel if it's as simple as this tool! - is it bought or rented from them?
Thanks

Hello
The nuts were on my rrs. The spinning hardened dome type, as on the disco. 4 garages tried to get it off with no avail. Dynomec claim they can remove any locking nut. After seeing it in action. I believe them.
Dynomec were emensly helpful. Give them a call they may be able to point you in the direction of a local business who have purchased them.
The kit to buy is around £125. I managed to talk a local garage to purchase one for future use.
Very Happy
