How Long Do Brake Disks Last?
Whilst changing a wheel a few days ago, I noticed that the rear brake pads are getting quite low (no warning light yet) but will be ready for changing soon.
The D4 has done 42k miles so far. Is it likely that it will need new rear disks as well or would a new set of pads be all that's needed?MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added

My warning light came on 2 days ago at 38.5k....rear pads were flagged by the dealer 2 weeks ago as 95% worn....fronts are 40% worn but they were replaced under warranty at 9k
I've been advised that my rear discs,while still having some life on them, are quite corroded (being coastal that's no surprise)
The rear pads and discs are being replaced next week by Disco Mikey...."Better to remain silent and be thought a fool,than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Really need to measure the thickness otherwise it is controlled guessing.

As Robbie says surprisingly 3mm of total width wear by LR recommendations, 30mm original 27mm worn out change for the front, don't know rears off hand.It can when others can't,

I'm amazed at the short life of discs on the D3.
My old D2 had original discs changed at 120k miles but then again, It was a manual and I used the engine braking to slow down much of the time so the brakes had an easy life.
Better start saving then.

Yep, 20mm out of the box with 17mm as the service limit.

In the overall cost of ownership, brakes barely register. Since joining this forum and learning about the brake bible and initially Nick @ Yeovil and later Steve at Advanced Factors I tend to do pads and discs at the same time. A full set of Brembo branded for the D3 are just over £90+VAT. I's not worth NOT doing the discs at the same time IMO. You've done 75% of the required work already.

That has always been my attitude to pads+discs,regardless of what car it was.....I'm sure over the years I've had many of both replaced that had some life left in them,but didn't see the point in turning 1 job into 2.....no doubt plenty will disagree "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool,than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Makes sens to me, and something I'll bear in mind when the time comes to do mine.

I have no arguments with the logic but I get 2 pad changes out of each disc without taking the disc to to the service limit, so I change the disc at every 2nd pad change.
As an easy DIY job with cheap quality parts available I agree that they are a non-event in the scheme of ownership.

If I am doing lots of motorway and towing and wear the pads in a year or two I will put a second set of pads in. If the vehicle takes a few years to wear pads out I replace the lot and start fresh especially if any rust has got into the disc.
The other thing I do regularly on a service is bleed a few inches of brake fluid and loosen up the nipples this keeps the fluid fresh that does the most work and helps keep your calipers from corroding.
Change the fluid every 3 years will save lots in the long run you just need to look at the colour of what comes out.D4

The decision I'm trying to make is based on cconvenience not cost. I can quite easily pop some new pads on myself but I don't want to do that if the disks are going to wear out before the next set of pads.
I don't want to try to change the rear disks myself - I don't want to have to fettle the epb as part of the job
If I probably need new disks, I'll keep driving 'till the light comes on then get the dealer to change them. If they'd last until the next service it would be good but I bet they won't MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added

remember the sensors only monitor 2 of your 8 brake pads.
when the sensor light comes on, your other 6 pads could be down to the metal and trashing your discs and giving you no brakes !!!Duncan
