Looking for D3 replacement |

I have moved out of the UK and unfortunately, I cannot continue to run my D3. Import taxes, RHD, it's just not doable.
So I am looking for something to replace it with and getting a bit stuck. First things first, I am not going anywhere near a Lion V6. I maintain the D3/4 is one of the best cars ever made but I simply cannot afford another engine failure and unwilling to take that risk.
I am looking at the ~2007 RR 3.6 TDV8, apparently pretty reliable.
Are these RR's similar to work on compared to the D3? I have rebuilt by D3 from the ground up and don't find them particularly challenging to work on.
There is also the chance of a SCV6 (petrol) D4 and there are also a few 5.0 V8s kicking around but the import tax is pretty high on these, even intra-EU.
I'm not completely opposed to coming away from the LR brand but I am sure I don't need to justify to this forum why I would like to stay. I've just watched Harry's Garage review of the new Prado and honestly, its inferior to a 2005 D3 in almost every way and costs 60x more...
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

apparently these TDV8 aren't as reliable as we believe. Maybe it's just the late ones with issues, and a 2007 would be ok.
I think the internals and design are very similar to the tdv6
Also the 5.0 petrol SC can have major failures too.
I would also avoid the SCV6 (petrol). I think they stopped making this engine for a reason! Reliability. (though this must be a first!)
I think the 4.4 and 4.2 SC petrol are bullet proof, but uses more fuel than the 5.0 !
Also avoid the BMW engines in the FF

The TDV8 is not the reliability issue that the TDV6 is. It does have some issues but they're well known and with care shouldn't present a problem. It doesn't randomly snap cranks, anyway. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I'm going to look at a couple of 2007/8 3.6's in the next few days. I've never been near one before. I'm hoping my 10 years experience of the D3/4 will suffice enough to figure out if theyre any good.
I'm not bothered about fixing things and ive been familiarising myself with the TDV8's issues. As long as its not going to randomly snap on me, im sort of happy. It does sound like theres some risk of turbo and egr bits getting sucked into the engine but seems relatively avoidable.

"The 3.6 motor:
- intercooler hoses, intake manifold cracks/holes, turbo and EGR failure seem to be the main failure points.
- OEM intercooler hoses seem to fail after a few years and are really a consumable.
- intake manifold failure seems to be a fatigue issue, not very common so hard to know.
- Turbo compressor fans going out of balance, hitting housing and sending bits into the motor (cause possible build up of junk on fins, or wear combined with oil starvation from oil feed partial blockage).
- EGR failure ie the valve face cracking and dropping bits into the motor or staying partially open and dropping in excessive exhaust into the motor, another is EGR coolant failure resulting in coolant being fed into the motor.
- excess oil vapour being fed into the motor due to CCV filter being under spec. Not sure about this."

ISTR Disco_Mikey saying the EGR on the TDV8 was less problematic than on the TDV6. Certainly on mine they were only changed because I had an inlet manifold done and it seemed like a good time to do them whilst they were in there rummaging about. They were over 150k miles old by that point.
I had an intercooler top hose split. Easiest bit of car DIY I ever did changing that - two hose clips and done.
I had both turbos replaced when they did the dreaded deed. And then, thanks to LR main dealer incompetence, they were done again 6 months later. But that was a spanner monkey issue rather than the car being a problem.
This was on the RRS rather than FFRR version. The turbos are located differently on the RRS thanks to the smaller engine bay, however. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

If you're interested in the L322, have you scoured the FFRR forum? Everything you need to know and a lot else besides is on there.

If you can cope with 5 seats and a smaller boot, the L322 or L405 is a reasonable alternative to the D3/4. The split tailgate was key for me replacing my last D4 with one, but nothing currently for sale is as versatile and practical as the D3/4.
Whilst the L405 is superior in many areas, for me the L322 is the most Range Rover of all the post classic FFRR's.
The issue is age, at nearly 18 years old any 2007 FFRR is bound to need "work" on a frequent basis. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

2015 D4 HSE (A heated what?)-GONE

I don't know what you intend to spend... but I will say it, the natural thing is a New Defender I6 Diesel MHEV, is the replacement I think!! lost in translation!

Hi,
I have a D3 with full camping gear and Off road tires. I really enjoy it as well.
Recently, I bought a 2007 3.6L TDV8 L322. It has 480 000 km...
I must admit it is quite a different vehicule.
First, it has a lot more torque and power. Thus the engine runs at lower rpm's.
It is also a little smaller inside due to the shape of the FFRR vs D3's. And the rear seats are taking a huge space when folded. Do not consider sleeping in a L322 !
On the road, the L322 is brilliant. It is good on mountain roads, highways. Very versatile.
Mine is a Vogue. So I have the full comfort : heated and cooled front seats, heated steering, etc...
In my opinion, if you drive a lot on the roads and need a good off-roader (but quite small inside), the L322 is a good option.
As to the reliability of the 3.6L TDV8, Harry has the main aspects. When testing, also check for coolant overpressure. Head gaskets may fail at some point (it is my case and I will need to adress it). D3 TDV6 for holidays use,
