LOST ALL DRIVE FORWARD AND BACK
Hi all, I have a 2006 D3, I went to a play and play, on the way up a hill, I heard a clunk. I decided to reverse down the hill and while traveling on the flat through some mud a ping told me the G/box had overheated and now I have lost all drive fwd and reverse, it now also makes a grinding sound when selecting park.
I have checked the driveshafts and they all appear solid, what else could it be please? If it's g/box I'll sell it. I was converting it into an overlander and it has over £5k of extras fitted to it. It's listed for sale online on the pretence it needs a new gearbox.
If it is the Torque Converter how much would that cost to replace?
TIA
Scott

It's False economy just replacing the torque converter needs a gearbox overhaul at the same time , Just done this myself get it back this week £2700 from Planet gears Peterborough .

Sorry mate , I know it sucks ,But the question is will you get the money back you have put into it ? , or make a huge loss ? , and if you sell it what are you going to replace it with and will it be fault free ?
unless you buy a new vehicle that is ,even then there is no guarantee you will get trouble free motoring ,
So do you bite the bullet and get the D3 repaired and stick with a vehicle you know ,
I had the same dilemma had sunk a fair bit into it already ,I looked around to see what was on offer even for 5 to 6k they needed work and money spent on them that's what swayed me in the end better the devil you know .

It's a bloody money pit lol. I get what you are saying, it's currently advertised on a well known auction site, if it doesn't sell I'll probably get it fixed. Pain in the backside aren't they, but I do love the D3.

I had my TC done at Bristol Transmissions for about £1500. That was a couple of years ago and about 15,000 miles. At risk of temtping fate, its been perfect since. They're a great outfit and service plenty of Land Rovers (Highways Agency fleet, eg).
These things are expensive items but if you add up the maintenance (not modifications mind you) cost over say 3-5 years it is still quite cost effective compared to financing a newer car. No motoring is free, so I consider £200 per month over the year on average for servicing, parts, repairs, preventative maintenance, etc, about right. Stick that aside into a sinking fund for when these bigger jobs need doing and it'll ease the pain.
Hopefully you havent royally screwed the gearbox at the same time, but Bristol will check it before spending your cash for you. (At least they did that for me at the time).2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...
2014 BMW 435d convertible. Bought July 2021. 58,000 miles and counting...
2005 Discovery 3 HSE Auto. Bought Feb 2019. 169,000 miles and counting...
2009 Freelander 2 XS Manual. Bought Sep 2013. SOLD Aug 2021 (already regretted!)

I'm up on the Wirral, not many good garages round these parts. Bristol is just way too far away.

In a way you hope it doesn't make the money in auction but it's going to hurt to get it put right .

Could be the transfer box It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
