Lost all power steering fluid?

Hi,

Yesterday we packed the trailer up ready for camping with the kids, as I drove the car off the drive, I hardlocked the the wheel left and it made a growling noice and I saw smoke from drivers side of bonnet. Power steering has gone and loads of clean yellow oil in a puddle under drivers side. I thought power steering fluid was red? Also how do I find where it’s leaking? All garages near me are stacked and we are meant to be on holiday.

Thanks
Clark

Don’t worry about the color of the PSF. It can be anything from light gold/yellow to green or red. What matters is the spec just as with other fluids. For example, Fuchs (ex Pentosin) Titan CHF is dyed green. If it’s old it can be black. Mr. Green

The power steering fluid reservoir is of course on the left [non-driver’s side on RHD) in the engine compartment and the pump is beneath on the same side.

As you see fluid on the right underneath the vehicle, if I had to guess, you have a problem with the hoses to the steering rack or steering rack (like the pinion seal) itself.

You have learned a lesson I’ve preached over and over again, “do not hold power steering in full lock”
that is when it blows seals or pipes, always but always when you’ve reached full lock back off slightly. when you are in full lock you are putting the system under maximum pressure and blowing the safety valve.
You could have blown a seal or burst a pipe whichever is the weaker, sorry!- hope you get it sorted.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
